What books have you and your youngsters enjoyed reading together in the preschool years?

My girl is very attentive and interested in reading together, but she's only 3. I'd like to get into a longer book, with pictures, but also plenty of text, that we could read a few pages of each day. I'm so tired of reading kids books, and she'd have me read 10 or more in a row if I was willing. I think we're both ready for a longer setting.

Curious George? Especially some of the ORIGINAL ones are longer and still have the pictures.

Maybe look into the Easy reader section of the local public library. Henry and Mudge books are great. You need to be extremely careful however as much of the time the more indepth and longer a book gets - chances are it is above her comprehension/understanding level.

BUT I would also encourage you to NOT show your frustatration when it comes to reading her favorites. That is how young children learn the basic skills required for learning to read later. I'm SO tired of Curious George - BUT my 7 year old has LOVED these books since she was 3 years old. Now that she is reading them on her own she still loves it when Mommy or Daddy read to her. Even if we've read the same story a billion and 5 times.

Blessings,

Garsy

That's the way it goes, huh, Garsy? I remember once when my dd was about 3 years old, we were visiting friends several hours away and decided to drive home at the kids' bedtime so they'd just sleep and we'd miss traffic. Dd was refusing to go to bed without Dr. Seuss' ABCs book. Dh was amazed that I was able to quote the entire book from memory. It's not that hard to memorize - espcially when I'd read it every night for about the last year! At 3-4 mine were really into anything Seuss. It's not like read-alongs or early readers but the rhythm of it, I think, is a great precursor for learning reading.

Max Lucado has some good kid's books, a bit longer, but I'd read them in one sitting. I'm not sure I'd do a multiple sitting book at that age, just look for some longer stories, so you can get away with reading only one of two instead of 10.

Dr. Seuss are also longer than some other little kid books, and is great for teaching rhyming and rhythmic reading.

My 3 year old's current favorite book is "Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?". Simple enough that she can almost "read" it herself (still needs help with some of the colors). She loves that. She likes the 10 Little Monkeys book for the same reason.
