Since I cannot afford a seminary class, can you recommend some good study tools for learning Greek? I need a good text book and either cd or dvd for pronounciation.

Thanks..

MHO is the best thing you can do is learn latin or spanish, with that you can understand, latin, spanish, italian, and greek.

The only thing you will differ in and will be more easily learned is the different dialects. This reflects in speech and to my knowledge if you are doing to read only, they do sell greek for dummies along with a cd.

I used this one with my oldest two kids, while attending a six-session class taught by a local pastor -- The Basics of Biblical Greek.

It was good then, and has gotten better since then.

I had the benefit of a year of college classroom instruction, with an excellent professor. Still, the first time I doggedly forged my way through the Greek NT, dictionary close at hand, I could comprehend maybe 30% of it. I went from one recognized word to another, filling in the blanks from memory of the English -- rather like crossing a stream on stepping stone. Second time through, I was up to around 40% comprehension ...

Learning and reading the Greek NT has been one of the most rewarding activities in my Christian life. It's a thrill to read Paul's words, in the words that Paul wrote, for example. To consider the contrasting styles. Luke is hard reading, since his Greek is so good. Peter, since his Greek is so bad.

I'd say more, but my devotional readings (Turkish NT) await me.

Our Pastor is teaching a Greek class on Wednesday night, after Bible study. They usually have between 10 and 20 people. It is in its second year. I attended for about 6 or 7 months, but had to drop out. Even that gave me a much better knowledge and is helpful when I use Greek tools on my computer.

We used Mounce's text book (most recent edition). It comes with a CD in the back to help with pronunciation. There is also a corresponding workbook that you can get too.

Best of luck in your Greek studies.
