You're not a bad mum. Nathan is running a slight fever tonight, and I can hear him having a restless sleep. And I was thinking this is not a good time to be sick, either! (We have company coming on Friday, and his birthday on Saturday.) I think it's worth a least a call to the doctor if he's not a lot better by tomorrow. I'll say a prayer for Judah.

My 2yo is sick too --- but not feverish. He just got back this morning from 3 days with Nana and Papa ... and they totally ignored his chocolate allergy. They complained that he had a rash on his face and at least 4 explosive diapers per day. Hmm -- the rash would be the hives he contracts when he eats chocolate, and the explosions are his body trying to get rid of the offending substance!!! WHY DON'T PEOPLE LISTEN??????????? He had a minimum of two glasses of chocolate milk each day, plus a cup of hot chocolate each night, plus a package of Smarties/M&Ms each day. So now he is still exploding, still has hives, plus is throwing up from all of the chocolate. AARGH!!!!!

When I first put Nathan to bed at 8pm, his fever was only 101, so relatively mild. He woke around 11pm, and it was 103.3. We did give him Motrin, as it really seemed to be bothering him. I nursed him, and put him back down, but he sounds restless in his sleep again. I think it's gonna be a long night, but we'll probably call the advice nurse in the morning if he's not better. Phone calls are cheap, and Kaiser docs are not ones to panic and over-medicate.

ORIGINAL: clag4christ Our pedi. told us to stop giving Hannah whole milk after her 2 year check up...because of the 'obesity' epidemic. We just smiled and nodded. She was in the 40% for weight I believe at that time. Joel drank whole milk for his entire growing up years and was *never* overweight. If they (kids) need the whole milk for improved brain function and growth up until 2 years...then why not past that? Hannah's growth is great and barely drinks any milk now...mostly juice and water (and some tea and coffee). I give my kids good portion sizes (not too much not too little) and they're very active! There's no reason to put them on a diet in their formative & growing years. That's kind of weird to recommend low fat milk for a child in the 40th percentile. I think a doctor ought to look at family history before determining whether a two year old should be getting low fat or whole milk. If you and Joel are both at a healthy weight, then your kids are more than likely to grow up to be that way too, right? Ryanne, I forgot why you said you won't be giving Gabby cow's milk when she's old enough. Did you read that thing I posted that Dr. Sears wrote about all the saturated fat and stuff and that milk isn't even the right kind of fat for brain developement anyway. I think I want to look into that more. If you have any info on that already, can you please give it to me? Jessica, 106F can boil the baby's brain and cause a seizure, although a girl I knew had a baby who had a 104 fever and had a seizure.. My doctor likes me to call when it gets to 102 and possibly make an appointment, but usually they ask me to call back periodically for status updates. My kids are listless at the first sign of fever, so I medicate when it gets close to 102 and ALWAYS before bed when I am unable to monitor the fever. Fevers and other cold symptoms have a tendancy to be worse at night too, so if his temp is 103 before bed, it could get way higher than that, and you would not be able to monitor it since you'd be sleeping too. Kara, I thought my mom was bad about giving Timmy junk food when he stays overnight at her house. By junk food I mean fig newtons and chocolate milk. LOL! Did they deliberately ignore your request, or did they just forget? Ruth, I love advice nurses. They are so convenient. I have no idea why people could overdose their children on cold medicine when there is always a 24 hour advice nurse at hospitals and the call is free, you don't even have to insurance to ask for proper dosing.

Christina, we don't do much cows milk because we don't think it's the best or the healthiest way to get fat or calcium. There is a good book called "Don't Drink Your Milk", it was eye opening to the fact that cows milk is not really that great for us. Anyway, we eat healthy fats like coconut, olive, and avocado oils and we get calcium from cheese, yogurt, and other calcium laden foods. Omega's are the fatty acids that are supposed to be good for brain development and when Gabby turns three we'll start giving her the munchkin version of the stuff we take- Nordic Naturals. She also won't get it because of allergy issues.

Thanks for the book recommendation, Ryanne. I imagine fish is probably pretty expensive there in CO, huh? Well, ocean fish would be, but not lake trout and steelhead and bass though since you can get that from rivers and lakes. Fish has a good amount of omega 3.

Yea, I need to find a good supplier for fish, I'm so spoiled from living back east where I could just hop down to the dock and pick up some fish.

The grandparents are of the school that kids CAN'T be allergic to chocolate (or candy, even though the artificial dyes cause hives in the boys as well). Honestly, if it weren't for the fact that they live an hour away, I'd be tempted to tell them he has to stay until his system was totally cleaned out. My nauseated pregnant stomach really doesn't need to be dealing with 4 wretched smelling explosions each day!!! Unfortunately, these are also the grandparents who will drop everything at a moment's notice to help us if we need it. And these are the grandparents the kids are closest to ... they don't have grandparents on my side, and dh has his dad and step-mom (these people) and then his mom and her 'boyfriend' His dad and step-mom are wonderful ... they really enjoy the kids, and get right down and play with them, etc. Whereas his mother frequently reminds dh (the oldest child) that he wasn't planned and she refuses to play with the kids ... and takes great pleasure in telling them that she loves my neice and nephews more than she likes them.

LOL Jess! Glad Judah is feeling a bit better! Chase is learning to crawl, and he's doing this flailing/inchworm thing, but he's getting around. Last night he was playing, and just decided we wanted in the exersaucer, so off he went and inched his way into the bottom tray part of the exersaucer! It was too cute. We have a video of him coming back out. He also has a diaper rash, and he's never had one his whole life! And last night we noticed his cheeks were bright red, so maybe he has a tooth coming. I don't feel anything yet though. And...my neighbour's baby is the same age as Chase, and he caught a stomach bug, and has been in the hospital for a couple days, so I'm watching closely for that. Oh, and (wow, I'm full of it this morning!) we had Chase adjusted at the chiropractor the other day. We've both been going and had him there with us, and she had a look at him and did a couple of things. Hopefully she can help us out. I had the appointment with the ENT doctor this week and he basically said that he'd grow out of the nasal congestion That was a disappointing answer. The poor little guy has such a hard time breathing at night, and the doctor just said "if it's bad enough, he would be breathing out of his mouth" Anyway, the chiro said she would do some stuff, and then she has some other remedies (homeopathic, etc) so we'll look into that. I hope everybody's sick babies are feeling better!!!

Jessica, glad to hear that Judah is feeling better. I hope you get plenty of rest, or as much as possible! Laura, thanks. Nathan's temperature was down this morning, too. He was much quieter and more cuddly then usual, and he just went down for an early morning nap, but he seems better. We'll see if his temp goes back up tonight. I can't really explain it; 103.3 seems to high for a teething temp, and he's never spiked a temp before for teething. He's nursing very well, though, and eating some solids. He nursed so much last night, that he soaked his diaper completely.

I used to nanny for a kid with CP (Cerebral Palsy) and we had to watch him very carefully because of fever spikes and seizures. Ruth....HERE is a good break down of fevers and what to do, when to call/be seen, etc.

Nathan just woke from his nap, and his fever is up again to 101.6. I feel like a see saw. He is quiet and wants to cuddle, but otherwise okay. His dad is watching him now, as he has the day off, and dH would like me to clean up the house a bit since we're having Easter company. Guess I gotta go. Thanks, Sarah.

Oh, Donna, that sounds awful, a bad cough is so yucky. When chase is working at crawling, he spits up a lot, is that probably because he is working so hard, and he's on his belly? Ruth, I hope Nathan feels better soon, give him lots of cuddles!

When Nate got above 102 he couldn't keep water down and so he would get dehydrated--therefore I medicated him (and for him we had to do the alternating tylenol and ibuprofen every two hours! He ran 104-105 degree fevers for DAYS when he was young...but now his immune system is fantastic, when Brandon and I got the flu, Nate got a 99 degree fever and a bit of a cough...the rest of us wanted to die!). But I wouldn't normally medicate a fever, since they are helpful, natural responses of the immune system, until 104 or so. Nurse Cindy says if you have a fever for three days to call the doc. She was talking to me, though, it might be less with a baby. I find, though, that after a few years of parenting, moms get a good 'feel' for when something is wrong that won't fix itself.

Although my first was a chronic sickie (pneumonia over 10 times in the first 2 years), so I tend to be comfortable with a bit more sickness than some would. My doctor has instructed his receptionist that if I call to get my kids in, they are to fit them in no matter what, because I am usually right, and usually have some idea what they have also. Definitely not a paranoid parent.
