So, my 6-yr-old got to pick out something for losing his first tooth, and he picked this new Lego Bionicle animated movie. I was wary and ready for it to be a cheap-o type of project that was hastily done just to make some cash from the popularity of the Bionicle toys. Boy was I wrong! This was a great movie! No, it isn't deep. No, it isn't forging new territory in animation or movie making. But, the animation is VERY well done, the score isn't half bad (the 2 songs during the end credits are good enough that I may try to buy them, "Ride" by Presence, and "Bye Bye Babylon" by Cryoshell), the story is interesting enough to hold my attention for the whole thing, but straightforward enough that my son followed it. Plus, the best thing about the movie: Michael Dorn as the lead voice actor! That's right, Worf is Mata Nui, complete with war cries, growls, and commanding dialogue! Along with Dorn, the rest of the voice acting and dialogue is surprisingly good, and the voice cast is actually made up of a lot of very good and well read voice actors (voices of actors who have voiced characters from Transformers: Animated, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Ben 10, Johnny Test, several actors from Star Wars the Clone Wars, Spongebob, Phineas and Ferb, Chowder, Flapjack, Foster's Home, Back at the Barnyard... on and on. Check out the cast list: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1473345/ The movie is definitely family friendly, as long as you don't object to lots of sword fights between robots. This is definitely an "action" movie, and there are a lot of battles, including the barely cheated "death" of Mata Nui at the beginning and the death of a bad guy near the end. The themes of friendship, trust, teamwork, unity, and sacrifice are all VERY front and center throughout the movie. The good guys are good, the bad guys are bad (except for one "Judas" character), and good stands up against evil. All in all, this was a very fun movie, and I am glad we bought it. If you want something to enjoy with your kids (probably more appealing to boys), or if you are just a cartoon geek like me who likes fun adventures, it is well worth a watch.

we watched the first one - bionicle: mask of light - last night. my own 6 year old son and i talked about the ideas of the movie, and the chief one that he brought up was the fact that light always triumphs over darkness. and then he said, "that's a God thing, right?". and i said yes, often we can find Truth - God's Truth - in movies we watch. he thought that was pretty cool. so now i get to teach him how to think theologically about the movies he's watching -- finding the "God things" in them. very. cool.

That is so awesome! Even when a bunch of unbelievers get together and make a movie, objective morality still comes through. This is actually one of the historic arguments for the existence of God in Christian apologetics ;)
