What is your understanding of Matthew 23:37 Matthew 23:37 37"Jerusalem, Jerusalem, who kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to her! How often I wanted to gather your children together, the way a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were unwilling.

Only one being could utter those words, God. Jesus is making one last attempt to get Israel to pull the blindness from their minds, and hearts, to see who He really is. This utterance must have been extremely painful for Jesus, when He was further rejected, especially by the Priesthood. In Messiah. Arley

There are several OT passages that liken God's refuge to that of being tucked away safely under the feathered wings of a bird. This is the one that comes to mind for me: Psalm 91:4 4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. What many of us don't realize is that much of what Jesus spoke had it's inspiration from the OT. The picuture of a mother hen and her chicks has an endearing quality about it, don't you agree?

I think it shows that God is always working to draw us to Himself, and we reject Him. It shows that there is a need on our part to be willing.

What many of us don't realize is that much of what Jesus spoke had it's inspiration from the OT. The only Bible was the TORAH and the PROPHETS and what they call writings. Jesus operated under the Old Testament. We some how assume Jesus and the Apostles had the Bible we do.............lol When the Bereans searched the Scriptures to see if what Paul was saying was true or not, they were searching the Torah. Most of the NT is quotations of the OT. Jesus always used illustrations so the people could understand him if they had ears to hear.

He won't force us under his protection if we don't want any of it.

Jesus was clearly disappointed at the Jew's anticipation of him as merely a political and deliverer from the oppression of the Greeks and now the Roman occupation however Isaiah and Jemimah said the Messiah would be rejected as Savior of the nation Israel so it doesn't didn't some as a shock. Even so his last week was the culmination of a clear distinction of the rift between fresh and salt, goats and sheep, hot and cold.

Yes there is definitely an endearing quality about this verse.

I would not pull that verse alone from the rest of the statement. Mat 23:38 Behold, your house is left to you desolate. Mat 23:39 For I tell you, you will not see me from now on, until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!’ He took the focus of His outreach from being solely to the Jews and directed it toward the gentiles, thru the apostle Paul. (v 38) He is THEN saying that He will not be seen again (i.e. return to earth) until Jerusalem (being the Jewish capital) says "Baruch HaBa B'shem Adonai" (Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!) which is from the Jewish wedding custom; the bride yells this when she sees her groom coming to get her and take her away to their new home together. I (and most Messianics) take this to mean that the Lord will not return until there is a critical mass of ethnically Jewish believers (perhaps even living in Jerusalem) who will welcome the Lord's return as a bride welcoms her groom on their wedding day.
