I have noticed that fewer and fewer books are actually printed in the U.S. anymore. I picked up this one devotional book and noticed it was printed in China. I’m thinking, well it could have been printed by Christians but then again it’s just as likely it was printed by slave labor.

Of course what goes around comes around. As we seen the American economy falling apart, it does not take a rocket scientist to tell you outsourcing is a major contributing factor.

It isn't just books. Browse through the gift section of a Christian book store some time an see how much of it is made in China. The irony of a cross made in a country that denies the existence of God would be funny if it weren't so sad. You can't bring a bible into China, but you sure can export a bunch of them from there.

Time to betray myself a bit: I know a little about the publishing industry. Many Christian book publishers aren't Christian, aren't owned by Christians and could care less about the accuracy of the text so long as it sells to someone.

It's a business. Like most businesses it isn't inherently christian or anything else.

Business with China is just good business and there a LOT of Christians over there, too.

True, but...

Some publishers of Christian books and Bibles indeed are Christians. For example... my employer. Most (not all) of our jobs require the person to be a Christian, active in a local church (and for some job positions, it's denomination specific).

And most of (if not all of) our stuff is printed right here in the good ol' USA.

To the OP: Just keep looking for a publisher whose business you do want to support. In Christian publishing, yes, business is an aspect... but where I am... ministry is the reason we exist.

Seriously? They can discriminate against ones beliefs? I thought that was illegal.

Nope. Gotta be saved to work at the book store. I suppose if someone wanted to, they could make a fuss and bring a law suit.

But I do not think that they could discriminate because of this though. If the person was very knowledgeable about the products being sold and offered a "non-biased" opinion on the selling, then I would see a person's beliefs being irrelevant as defined by law.

It's sad that people have to make a business out of Christianity. But in the world, that's how it goes.

I buy a lot of my books from a Christian publishing company in Canada/WI area called Gospel Folio. They have a lot of good ones!

Yeah outsourcing in general is tough for America to swallow. Unfortunately there is nothing we can really do to stop it. We are a free economy and our companies have the freedom to hire cheaper labor. I think the only thing we can do is make it illegal to hire "slave labor" like you said.

I used to think like you do. And then I realized that I am just as qualified if not more then most people in elected offices in the United States including being President. If the sexualy disoriented community(gay) being as small as it is can have the impact that it does, you and I can do something about it.
