honestly, I haven't seen one for college students. however, some camps do hire volunteers or actually hire camp staff. so, you could probably do that. as a camper i attended one church camp and became a counselor when i turned 16. another camp- this one isn't a church camp but is a good example- it is called heart camp and it is a camp for children with heart problems. when you are 16 you become a junior counselor, then at 18 a counselor- i've gone since i was 11. so, i would just search camps you can be a counselor at because i've never seen ones where you could be a camper...

Usually at that point, such things are merged in with adult ministries, so you'd have women's retreats, etc.

There are college/career groups/ministries that may have retreats as well.

Our 21 year old daughter is working at a church camp this summer as a counselor. Many of the other kids did go there as a camper but our dd did not. However, our family is close friends with the director

Just to give you a heads-up; both because of our friendship with this family and my role working in ministry to kids, I know that camp counselor positions were extremely hard to come by this summer. The economy is taking a huge toll on camps and there are many more college students who need to work for pay right now.

If you are serious about being a counselor next summer, I suggest that you get some experience working/volunteering with kids between now and then. Until there is a drastic turn around in the economy, you are going to need some experiences or special skills to set you apart.

Many college professors actually spend time in the summer working at camps. Don't underestimate how valuable a good reference can be....see above

Seriously, if they know someone who will vouch for your character, work ethic, and that you are a committed follower of Christ; that can be a huge advantage.

Many colleges encourage their students to volunteers in the community. Being a tutor at the local elementary school, mentor to students, Big Brothers/Big Sisters; these are activities that show your commitment to kids.

Best move is to look into the Christian ministries on campus. IVCF and Campus Crusade are on virtually every campus in the country and they tend to have retreats and programs in the summer.

That said, college is also a good time to be demonstrating that you can participate in the workforce. It would be good to have some recognizable work experience on your resume. Working at a Christian camp might be a good move, but some employers look for more secular 40 hour/week jobs. (I was a lifeguard/counselor at a Scout camp for a summer in HS and respect just how much work camp employees do, but an eight hour/day job is seen as more closely related to a full time professional job than 16 hours/day at a camp)

Is there any way to do one or two weeks of a retreat and then spend the rest of the summer working at home in retail, at a pool/the beach, or in a factory? Besides the fact that it will probably pay better, it will give you an edge when applying for an intership or your first year-round job.
