Now, I am telling you this third-hand. That is probably like gossip: how much of it is really true? But someone here can probably correct me about this.

What I was told David Jeremiah said:
There were two brothers who lived very wickedly, and they were known all over town to be extreme sinners. (For want of a name, I will call them Sam and Bill.) One day, Sam died. The Bill went to an old respected preacher in town and asked him to perform the funeral. The old preacher said, "Mm-m-ummm. I don't think I can do that."

Bill said, "I will give you a large amount of money if you will do this for me!"

The old preacher just shook his head and said, "Mm-m-ummm. Don't think I can."

Frustrated, Bill said, "I'll give you twice that if you'll just say he was a saint!"

The old preacher thought about it for awhile, then he said, "Okay. I'll do it."

So the day of the funeral came, and the old preacher took his place behind the pulpit. He said, "Sam was a terrible sinner! Sam stole, he cheated, he . . ." and the old preacher named off sin after sin, telling just how bad dead Sam was. Finally, the old preacher finished with this: "But I can tell you this: Sam was a saint compared to his brother Bill!"

That story is not true at all. It's a humorous sermon illustration that has been around the American church for years. At my church, the interim pastor before our current one used this story from the pulpit. And then our current pastor used it too!

I've heard other Bible teachers and pastors on Christian radio use it as well. One variation of the story is that the two wicked brothers were in the Mafia, another was that the dead brother was a miser, and so forth.

But like a story that ultimately changes once it goes through the rumor mill and the grapevine, this fictional story probably morphed into something that truly happened. That's why I stay away from gossip in the first place.

But there's a reason it's heard so often: it's so wickedly funny.

Three pastors went to the pastor convention and were all sharing one room. The first pastor said, "Let's confess our secret sins one to another. I'll start - my secret sin is I just love to gamble. When I go out of town, it's cha-ching cha-ching, let the machines ring."

The second pastor said, "My secret sin is that I just hate working. I copy all my sermons from those given by other pastors."

The third pastor said, "My secret sin is gossiping and, oh boy, I just can't wait to get out of this room!"

Oh, of course! I would think that most people would recognize that. I didn't intend it as an actual occurrence -- just as a story he told.

I am glad you wrote your final line -- I started to think you were taking things way too seriously!

Now this is hilarious! Thanks for the laugh. It does good like a medicine.

I was presuming someone had a legitimate question about someone's ministry.

I was presuming this is not a post for the All Forums >> [Fun] >> Humor & Games part of the boards.

Sorry if you're offended...

As a part of ministry in a church, I understand the need to occasionally "lighten up." This was my purpose: to pass on an cute story with a very clear purpose spoken over the radio by a well-respected pastor. I am sincerely sorry for offending anyone here.

Know what? I withdraw my apology. I delight in telling good things about good people, whether it was something they said that was just very kind, something humorous, something wonderful, something good they said about someone, whatever. When I put that joke here, it was out of appreciation for Mr. Jeremiah and his ethical way of handling things.

Apology withdrawn.

Smile on!

I don't blame you. You did nothing to apologize for. You just helped to lighten the mood, and should be commended for it.
