Sometimes, after I've made a purchase, I start second-guessing myself and feeling guilty for buying a "want" ... something fun/frivolous that I didn't really need. The weird thing is, even if the purchase doesn't break our budget or cause some other bill to go unpaid, I still feel guilty.

Example: I just ordered 2 pair of shorts online (lime green and pink)... the total with tax and shipping was about $40. That is within my discretionary fund budget, and I know that I will wear and enjoy the shorts. (I've bought from the company before, and I like their products.) Yet I still wonder if I should've saved the $$ instead of spending.

Do other "savers" or frugalists ever feel this way? (And I'm not talking about wasting money, or spending money on something sinful, or spending money that you don't have to spend.....)

Sometimes I do.

With me, I think it is a combination of watching some of my family members just throw money away, and others who were tight as Dick's hatband, and being pretty appalled by both groups, but still catching the attitudes from them

When I am in the tight-as-Dick's-hatband mode, I begrudge myself any penny I spend, even if it is a necessity.

(Then when I am in the "Ah, it's only money" mode, I feel guilty when it passes.)

Nope...not anymore. I don't ever spend what we can't afford, never use credit cards, and never run us short in any way. And I never take from savings or money set aside for bills, tithes, or charities we support just to buy wants, so in my opinion, there is nothing to feel guilty about.

It did take some getting used to though, after so many years of a tighter than tight budget. When we started having more disposable income, my husband had to keep reminding me that it was okay. He figured we spent many, many years pinching pennies, so we should enjoy having some extras now.

Like cute shoes and lime green shorts!

I bought a netbook. It's so cute! And we *will* use it on vacations.

If you don't have some discretionary spending built into your budget, then you are doomed to fail in managing your finances. No one can do all work and no play. So treat yourself every now and then, tell yourself you deserve it, and enjoy being able to buy what you want... doing so within budget should make you feed good, not guilty.

Sometimes I feel guilty. This past weekend I treated myself to some wants just because I have been feeling stressed. I paid to have my car cleaned. I paid to get my hair and nails done. I had the money for it but I could have just done all those things myself like I always do. Did it change my mood? Yes. Are any bills going unpaid? No. But I still feel a little bit guilty because it was just a waste of money.

Yes, this is what I mean. I can be remarkably frugal at times, and then remarkably "unfrugual!" LOL! (Still within a budget, of course!)

Oh well, I'm looking forward to my fun new shorts, and my DH said he was glad I bought them. And he reminded me that I get to spend his 1/2 of our discretionary spending this month since he's in Iraq with no place to shop. (grin)

We spent years living from paycheck to paycheck while raising five children - there was no extra money. Now we're retired and there is extra money I always feel guilty when I spend on myself, I can give gifts to friends and family without guilt but can't seem to spend on myself.

I only feel guilty if I feel that I have "wasted" money, which is a subjective standard.

It reminds me of the broke guy who said: "I spent most of my fortune on strong drink and beautiful women. The rest I just squandered."

I only feel guilty if it interferes with my budget. I always have a certain amount of money for "fun" or unnecessary items with-in my budget. As long as I stick to that amount, I don't feel bad. But, if I were to start dipping into my "bill" money, then I would probably get nervous and start worrying about it.

Ask yourself this pertinent question as to whether the purchase was necessary. Do you think we'd rather see you without your shorts?

I've felt disappointed in a purchase whether quality, functionality or expectation but honestly I've not felt 'guilty' over a purchase. I'm pretty deliberate not a impulse shopper; that's one good thing about being poor.

Not really. There are times when a lot of things come up at the same time, hair nails, insurance, and I can feel bad because I am spending a lot at one time, but it is in the budget, but it just seems like a lot. Once I get paid more again, it will be out of the house budget and into my own budget again, and I won't feel so bad. My husband is a good guy, but sometimes does not understand why it costs $90 for highlights. I tell him, that is cheap! LOL!

But since we are deal shoppers. We wait and wait for the price we are willing to pay, and then when we get that price, we are happy we got such a great deal. So when my samsung 50 inch flat screen gets down to $1000 dollars, we are going to buy it and enjoy it. :)

I definitely feel guilty when I buy something I don't need. I am very ambivilant so it doesn't help the situation any because after I buy whatever it is, I question if I really like it. Even when I buy clothes when I need them, I feel guilty because I could have spent it on something else that's important, like personal items or whatever and that probably would have cost less.

Nope because I am putting the money back into the economy. I live in Hawaii and tourism has been way down (or so they say). If I had the money I would spend a long weekend at one of the hotel or resorts.

I don't feel guilty if it was already in my budget. Thanks Dave Ramsey!

Not "guilty" - "conflicted". Uncomfortable. I have the disposable income (after tithes, gifts, etc.), but sometimes I just wonder if I'm doing right with it.
