I am wondering when you goto a PCP and your doctor gives out a referral to you, say to see a back specialist, if they are referring you to the best person(s) or just their friend?

I have heard doctors say so and so is great, but then I wonder if it is because they have conectoins to that specialist and like to send each other patients back and forth? Is this the most objectively best referral?

I know in business, such as law, finance, mortgage, and insurance, they have these things called business network something something...where a group of professionals join groups that help them get referall business. But in that case, you're not referring them to the best necessarily, just someone within the group.

I guess it depends on your doctor. Do you trust your doctor enough to refer you to the best person they can or are they the kind of doctor you expect to refer you to someone who is their friend.

You could always ask your doctor why they're referring you to a certain doctor.

I agree with agapetos. I fully trust my doctor and he has proven worthy of it. He has referred me on three separate occasions and all three times I got a superior level of care. I was referred to the best in the area. I'm sure it has to do with a personal connection that he got me in with one of them, but given the calibre of this doctor it's ok.

Something about Lexie's post made me think of a comment my doctor made when I saw her last week.

I'd spoken to my psychiatrist a couple of weeks ago about coming off my meds to see how things went. He agreed and gave me a guide to reduce the first one. Saw my regular doc about something else just after that and discussed reducing them with her. She felt it was a positive step (even if I end up going back on them) and suggested that I reduce the amounts more gradually if I would feel happier about it (I did).

Then last week, I had to see her about something else and said that I'd started to reduce the meds. She said (grinning), 'This is what I like. We seek the consultant's advice and then totally ignore it!'

My doctor and my consultant know each other and have a lot of respect for each other and the consult about their patients when necessary. My doctor generally prefers to leave psych stuff to the psychiatrist and he prefers to leave general stuff to my gp, they have switched at times though.
