Status: offline 		In the early days of the internet, the big thing was newsgroups where people could share thoughts or questions on a common topic, something like forums are used today. For example: news:rec.music.makers.bowed-strings would be of interest to violinists or cello players.

Are they still being used?

Status: offline 		Newsgroups got *completely* obliterated by spam.

They were nice in their day; now, forums just work better.
