Last night I had to call on the Lord once again to rid me of the bad dreams that so often plague my sleep time. This time, like always, a heart felt prayer starting with the Lord's prayer and ending with the request that He chase the offending demon (or fallen angel if you prefer) that is bothering me away, worked.
It always works. Try it.

Doesn't look like there'll be much response to this post.

When I was a teen ager I had extremely horrible night mares; most I did not remember, thank goodness. But they were sufficiently bad that I'd wake up crying, ringing wet with sweat and terrified.

I was about 12 we moved to Oklahoma and were staying with my Aunt Evelyn, a woman of God all her life. I was asleep in the living room on a roll-away-bed and was making enough commotion that I woke her up, asleep in the her bedroom, thrashing around, caught in a nightmare and not able to wake up.

When I did wake up I told my aunt about the plague of nightmares; that I'd suffered with them for years and hated them.

She told me then to pray when I had a nightmare; that Jesus would keep it from coming back.

I have relied on this since then and it HAS NEVER FAILED TO WORK.

If you suffer with nightmares as I do, call on Jesus to help. He will always help.

Thank you for sharing about your nightmares leftwing. And we praise the Lord for helping you with them.

I don't often have nightmares, but I used to when I was young. Someone told me that we could change our dreams and I thought that was crazy. How could we control our dreams when we're asleep. But I've found this to be true. With time and the Lords help we can to some degree. Before going to sleep remind yourself that your not going to let anything bad happen in your dreams. Like for example if someone was coming towards you with a knife, they would suddenly turn and go another way, or something bad would turn into a flower. I once dreamed that my daughter was dead face down in the water but I wouldn't let it be and went into the water and turned her over and she was alive. I was so reliefed even in my dream.
As with all things I praise the Lord for helping us many times to control our dreams.

I'm not posting this to take anything away from your advice to ask the Lord to help and protect us from bad dreams, but only as an additional help. All good things come from Him.

Psalms 37:39 But the salvation of the righteous is of the LORD: he is their strength in the time of trouble.

That's nice. Ever try to get to the bottom of it? The reason WHY you have these dreams? There's reasons for everything.

Not sure what you mean by this. Reading your post, it would seem to me that this is an ongoing problem of yours. Perhaps you should try finding out why. That works too.

Point well taken. I don't know why the bad dreams come back. I always attribute it to the ways of my past; that the patterns of my thoughts, forged in my youth and younger years are still present, albeit subdued by my own will and the onset of age, i.e., diminished testosterone...

Forgiveness is a hard concept to grasp. Backsliding to despair and self loathing about the past is very automatic for me. I have to constantly remind myself that I am forgiven and to praise Him and move on.. to do good and forget the past. But it is hard for me and not an automatic process.

I suppose I rationalize all this thus: satan waits for the despair and old thoughts to creep back in. Then when I go to sleep, having not prayed for a day or two, he sees his way clear to sneek his sorry butt back into my dreams to try and scare me and at least torment me, reminding me of the yucky krap I used to do, to put it bluntly.

I may get into trouble with the mediators for language but I mean exactly what I said!!

Sparkle, this is a good point, and something I've found to be true also. I read once that our dreams are about ourselves not other people, many times symbolic, and saw someone speak once on dreams and how they can be used in our lives to help us, by doing the sort of things you are saying and changing them, standing up to fears that are within the dreams. I had a lot of nightmares as a child, (I wish I would have had a grandmother tell me what leftwing was told back then, then I would have known to call on Jesus) but I seemed to outgrow them, then after my separation from my ex-husband I had recurring nightmares. It really helped me as I began to think what the things in the dreams meant to me as a person. I believe that God uses dreams are a way of release of our inner fears and anxieties. Eventually he helped me understand the nightmare, and it changed into a dream that was no longer scary and went away.

I have always had nightmares and/or very vivid dreams. My parents always chalked it up to my imagination, which may be true in part. Sometimes I don't even remember a dream; I just wake up feeling horrible fear. This seems more spiritual to me. Even at 41, I sometimes go turn on the light if my husband isn't in bed yet! One verse that helps me is this:

Ps. 4:8 - I will both lay me down in peace and sleep; for you Lord make me to dwell in safety.

I also have bipolar disorder, and I notice a tendency to have certain types of dreams more when I am more manic or more depressed.

My mom always told me growing up that if I just say "Jesus help me" that He would help me. Sometimes as a child in a nightmare, that was all that I could get out, and evertime the nightmare would vanish. As an adult I was plagued by nightmares for a time, and one of my pastors suggested praying before I went to bed to ask the Lord to give me godly, peaceful dreams.

I do believe my dreams are attributed to my past, but I can't do much more counseling :-) But these things have helped me tremendously, but even still some late night pizza sometimes attributes to my dreams too :-)

Thank you all for the interesting comments. I see I am not alone and that the remedy I use is in fact a good one. The best, in my opinion.

One other thing, one lady mentioned a bi-polar disorder. I've never been diagnosed, nor have I pursued a diagnosis, ( I hate prescription medications. They are very pure and powerful and I'm someone who has suffered allergic reactions to meds before), but I think I have some of the symptoms of bi-polar disorder. I have never linked the nightmares with this so I have something to think about.
