I've been toying, for years, with the idea of dying a strand or two of my hair blue.

Why? Because I really like blue, and think it would look cool.

Thing is, I don't want the people at church to freak out about it. It's not that I want to be a rebel, or punk rock, or metal, or goth, or anything (though I do definitely love me some Skillet and Thousand Foot Krutch). I don't wear weird (or any, really) makeup, I've never dyed my hair except for a set of barely-noticeable highlights years ago that have long since grown out, I don't have odd piercings (in fact, I don't even wear earrings very often because they irritate my skin regardless of hypo-allergenic status), I usually wear jeans and a t-shirt, or a skirt and blouse for church. A lot of women dye their hair at my church, but it's a red or blond really obvious highlights thing, or a kind of odd shade of red (not sure if it's intentional).

I dunno. I guess what would you think if an otherwise more or less normal-looking woman had a strand of dark blue hair in her long medium-to-dark brown hair?

I think you should go for it. I will warn you though, when I dyed my sister's hair blue, we had to actually bleach it blonde before getting the blue to show. She has dark brown hair, so I'm guessing you would have to do the same.

If I could get away with it at my job, I'd totally do it.

Blue looks good on most people, but quickly fades. Be prepared to color more than once a week. (Depending on what you're using.)

This time of year, there are some great temporary hair colors out there ... I've seen blue and green. Why not try blue and see how you like it?

There are temporary hair color wands (like a mascara); you choose several strands of hair, whisk the wand through....Voila! I found mine at a favorite beauty supply store.

I used a green one for Halloween last year. I went as Mother Nature, with green vine tendrils, feather butterflies and silk flowers in my hair.

Another option you could look into are those colored hair clips. I think they sell for 2 or 3 dollars, and you could get it and test out the color in different spots before deciding to dye. It would also give you a feeler for the reaction of others, if you are concerned about it. They sell them in long lengths, and you cut them to fit your hair length. They are really easy to use, and look pretty realistic once attached.

If it's something you've been wanting to do, I don't see any reason not to try it.

Our receptionist (a couple of weeks before she planned to quit) dyed her hair - all of it, not just a couple of strands - pink, and she had to bleach it first.

I have an older lady at our church, early 60's maybe, who has some blue in her other wise white hair.

I don't have a problem with it, and actually admire her for the courage to color it that way.

Go for it. I concur with the temp colors tho. You may like it at first and change your mind later, plus the temp colors are safer on your hair than bleaching and adding the blue kicker (Which you would have to do often).

Gotta show us in your avatar if you do it!!!!

Have fun!

Just FYI, there is no such thing as permanent blue color. You will likely end up dying another color over the faded color when you get tired of it.

Lol Manda!

ok ok- in school, one very important thing we learned... we dye clothes, easter eggs, etc.....we color hair...they used to fuss at me all the time for saying that! haha

Stellaluna is right, blue will fade then you'll be able to change it to something like green or pink if ya wanna get experimental! Either way you go, I still hope to see a pic!

Oh, PJ. I KNEW you were going to say that!

As for me, I'm afraid I'm now too old to color my hair like that. I missed all my opportunities when I was younger because my jobs would not allow it.

However, if you are concerned about remarks in church or wherever, I echo the getting the hair pieces you can clip in. Easy removal for when you need it. However our church - well, many of our teens do stuff to their hair. Purple streaks, pink hair, etc. It's kind of the norm here for teenagers.

Nothing wrong with a few streaks in my hair even at 40 something. I just got it all cut off so maybe I'll do pink. I like pink.

My step-daughter did purple. But then she's 20. My dd wants to do pink and she's 13 but her hair is very dark. Pink will show up in blonde hair though.

You can buy blue hair extensions that can either be glued or sewn into your hair. If you get natural hair extensions instead of the cheaper polyester ones, it'll look like it's part of your real hair, and you don't have to worry about re-coloring like you'd have to do with dye. My sister has blue extensions she puts in when we go to hockey games, nobody would know it's not her real hair if she didn't tell them.

My hubby can't post in here, but he wanted to say that he colors with crayons, but he has to use dye in his hair so it won't wash out.

I'd go for it too! I've been wanting to do the same thing but can never work up the courage (also DH isn't keen on the idea). If you're concerned about how obvious it would be, you could dye a streak at the side, which wouldn't show much if your hair was down and other hair covered it. Sorta like getting a tattoo on a spot that's often covered. I had a hairdresser once try to talk me into blue lowlights by using that reasoning, after I'd finished explaining that I was really loving my natural colour at the time.

Do give some thought to whether you wear anything a lot that would clash with it. I once dyed my hair a dark burgundy, and it clashed with anything red or pink in my wardrobe. I doubt you'd have many issues with blue, but if it's a dark, royal blue it might look odd with warmer colours (eg mossy green).

I think if you want to dye your hair purple you should go for it. I think your kids would find it fun and funky. Have fun with your hair! Heck, you can always dye it back.

There will always be people looking at you no matter what you do. That is what people do unfortunately. It makes them feel better about themselves. You'd just notice it more if you put blue in your hair.

My suggestion is if you choose to put blue in your hair. Be fierce with it. Walk tall with your head held high and don't let ANYONE make you feel weird. Own those blue streaks like you'd own the catwalk.

Edited to say "I know you don't want to dye your hair purple, I was just using it as an example. :)"

I say go for it.

I had my hair coloured this afternoon. Not blue though.

I'd get my hair coloured, but apparently my hair would go pink, not red. I forget why. Nothing wrong with pink, but I just wanted a really out there red. Oh well.

I'm already a 6' woman. Being stared at I can handle, that's happened all my life. ;)

I'm having to put it off for now, though, hubby's in Alaska and I can't really take a 2 year old and 8 month old to a salon, and I think I might need help doing it myself.

I might have to go find some fake hair, just to try it out and see if I like it... Halloween season is probably the easiest time of year to find weird stuff like that.
