Don't spend anymore than you can afford, don't go into debt on your credit card to the tune of 5 grand if you only make 30 grand per year... you can upgrade it later when you are making more $$$. I actually got off cheaper than usual. Her Dad gave me an old ring to scrap and have a custom ring made. We re-used the diamonds, they were top quality and brilliant, and the scrap gold covered most of the cost.

What he said.

You're going to have most jewelry store salesman tell you that "two months salary" is a common starting point (which translates into 15% of your annual salary) - it also translates into a load of debt for most people.

Spend what you can afford to now and upgrade later when you can afford more. The bigger trick is figuring out what she likes so you can get her something she'll be happy with.

Sometimes you can find a really cool, unique antique ring that will be less expensive than a comparable new ring (sometimes antique diamonds weren't cut to give them quite the sparkly brilliance you see in diamonds today so they cost less).

The other thing to keep in mind right now is that some jewelry stores are really hurting, so don't be afraid to negotiate like crazy...you may be able to get a really good deal right now.

She doesn't like the smell of cigar smoke, so she didn't get the band....

It was decades later that the set was completed. When we could afford it.

Hello 7over6

I would stay within what might be expected of your socio-economic level. Yet, it's not always the more costly rings that may be the most appealing.

I've purchased two such gems in my lifetime (widowed both times, so I didn't do the unpardonable sin). The second one had a six month guarantee in case she turned me down. But we've gone way beyond that into the marriage, so ... well ... no refund available.

I thought blaspheming the holy spirit was the unpardonable sin... anyway do I buy her a band for engagement AND myself an engagement ring also? And when we actually get married I get her a wedding ring that fits in to the engagement ring?
Or is it common to get a weddign ring to totally replace the engagement ring?

I bought a VERY nice looking "princess cut" diamond ring (about a 1/2 carat) for around $800ish in 1996.

a friend of ours from the church we were going to at the time, along with her husband, owned a jewelry store....so, she made sure I got a great ring at a great price.

she bought ME my wedding ring...a nice gold band, with a row of 8 small diamonds along one side (the "top" side of the ring that faces "UP")....not sure what she paid for it...

From the traditions I know, you get her an engagement ring (some cultures ie Turkey if I remember right the man also gets one) but in the US I have not seen male engagement rings. What I did, and I have known my wife since we were 4, was buy a cheap (~100) ring to propose with, then we could have a nice LONG (ie save up money) discussion about what she would want to wear the rest of her life. Worked out so far and I was able to buy her diamonds in cash. I also looked for what I would want to see on her hand, because you have to look at it too, remember that. Hope that helps. Good luck and God bless

yeah you are right it is blasphemy of the Holy Spirit.

7 - you buy the engagement (diamond) ring now. you don't need to purchase wedding bands (often plain rings) right now. it's something that can be done together after the fact. on your wedding day, you'll each give each other the bands. the woman's band doesn't need to fit into or connect, it just sits nearby and you'd want it to match.

I spent my life savings on a $750 wedding/engagement set in 1978. I was 17. After the wedding (1979), she had them soldered together.

I spent $1,750 on her engagement ring. I was in college and didn't have a job, but I had been saving a stockpile of money from winning research and writing competitions and never spending lightly. I also had a full ride for the whole thing, accomplished in part by taking a super-overload and finishing in three years. My friends drove WRX STI's, Nissan 350z's and BMW 325's. I drove a $250 1985 Pontiac Fiero with 187,000miles an peeling paint. My friends had $2,800 Apple laptops. I built my desktop for $485. I wanted to spend money on something that would last forever. This was it.

I spent $800 in '79 and it didn't buy much at that time. That was pretty much all my cash at the time as I was still in college.

I kind of regret not waiting a couple of years to get married cause I would have been working and I could have gotten her a better ring, better wedding and better honeymoon. Still in college though, there wasn't money for anything but the basics.

Don't go overboard but don't scrimp either. IMO, 3 to 4 K$ will get you a respectable set.

I paid $2100 4 years ago for a 3-stone ring with a customized basket, a .55ct center stone and outer stones that I provided.

I proposed to my wife without an engagement ring. Due to pressure from her "friends", and a false sense of tradition on my part, I took her out and we went looking for a ring. She didn't want one, but I insisted I ought to do it.

I ended up buying a $99 ring at Walmart. She wore it up until we got married, and it has sat forgotten in a jewelry box since that day. I wish I had listened to her to begin with.

I am not sure how much that might help you, but my advice is to keep in mind what kind of person she is and what kind of ring she would be happy with. I think the money spent on the ring is not as important as the ring itself being the right one for her. Two months salary is absolutely ridiculous. Of course any jeweler will tell you that, it's more money for them. What do they care if you go into debt beyond your means...

Also take into account her activities.

I bought my late wife a 1/2 carat ring for about $2200 (It was a very good quality stone) back in 1987.
We had the wedding band custom made later to fit the setting I selected.

She thought the size was perfect as anything larger would snag on the stuff she was working with or just get in the way.

What sorts of rings does she wear now? If they are bigger rings you can go bigger if you feel the need to. But if she wears all flat type rings then be careful that you don't get a setting that sticks out too far.
