With the celebration of Independence Day tomorrow (for those in the U.S.), let's talk about freedom.

One of my favorite verses on freedom is John 8:31-32.

Jesus was therefore saying to those Jews who had believed Him. "If you abide in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free."

And a quote from a book I'm reading by Sue Monk Kidd says:

The more we find ourselves loved, the more we are set free.

I believe hers are powerfully true words as well.

Yes Freedom is only free by two means Jesus Christ and our American Soldiers.
These two examples show that freedom comes with a cost, let us take the time to reflect and honor them both.

In keeping with Independance Day and the founding fathers:

"Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." John Adams

If we are capable of governing ourselves under Nature's God and the Laws of Nature, we will remain free. If we forget to teach upcoming generations about Nature's God and the Laws of Nature we will need a powerful government to tax and control us. We will become slaves....

The founding fathers sought freedom and liberty, and fought a war over excessive taxes and government control. How much wiser are they than we? They knew the Truth and stood up for it against tremendous forces and at great risk... It was a miracle of God that born the U.S.A. and we are throwing it away for lack of Truth.

OK, I agree. But it is man's nature to return to bondage. The Israelites longed to return to Egypt. The Galatians longed to return to legalistic bondage. And the church continues to seek bondage as well.

Are we throwing it away because like the Israelites we really don't believe? prefer law? prefer legalism?

Freedom is rooted in relationship. Relationship requires commitment and effort.

I'm just thinking out loud here and just throwing out thoughts. What do others think/say?

Hello Liveloved


I believe that God wants to see people live in freedom on every level of existence. I think He inspired the words of the documents of this nation. I love the words, Live, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. I think He loves all of these and wants people to enjoy living them.

I am realizing just how much Jesus truly does love me,and believe he is
going to set me free from anything holding me back from being all I can in God.

Perhaps you hit the nail, right on my head. We seek bondage, in our heart, but have trouble recognizing the best bondage, In God, because He refuses to do anything to force us to be in His 'bondage' of love, except through 'choice,' ours. We, not having someone beat us over the back, to show us we are in bondage, look for that tangible proof, and can only find it under man being in physical bondage to man, and therefore self-destructive behavior causes us to ruin any form of existence, where we are free. Oh we crave freedom, but do not know how to keep it, nor appreciate it when we do have it.

On Faith radio, this morning, I heard three different pastors address how we, in Christianity, have lovingly stood back and watched our Faith be strangled by our inaction, and in some cases eagerness to see change, easier to mortally sin in, without judgment (paraphrased, but close). Two of them, also reminded us that 'ALL' leaders, be they believers or not, in God, are His servants, and all that is accomplished, be it good, or be it bad, for mankind, is (repeat: IS) ultimately to Glorify God. Our God can make make manna, and honey, out of hatred, and sin.

Time for: Our God, is an AWESOME God! Amen

This is a great thread. I believe we need to remember all those who have sacrificed so we have this wonderful country to live in. Not only should we remember the ones who started our country but those who still defend it today. I believe fewer today have any respect for our founding fathers or the military. We now see our countires leaders apologizing to other countries for our position in the world. We see the historiacl revisionists denying any Christian influence in the founding of our country. This I believe is a reflection of their denial of God's protection over America. I still believe we are a Christian nation although we are slipping into what Europe has become.

We also need to remember all those who stood up for Christ and the Bible throughout the ages, especially the reformers of the 16th century. We celebrate the 4th of July like crazy but on Reformation day we seldom even give it a nod. JUst my thoughts.

In answering some of the questions on this thread, I could write a five page essay.... but I won't. It boils down to a lack of Truth AND inaction, as someone said.

This is because serving God and finding the Truth requires a GENUINE commitment of time and practice. The more practice seeking confirmation of the Truth and doing the Truth, the more understanding and confidence comes our way. The mainstream churches make sort of unconscious decisions between these: "Go along as normal" or "Go seek the extraordinary." Human nature tends to "Go as normal" rather than "Run the race to the finish," as Paul would say. Mediocrity is the result for the majority in the church just as it was with the Isrealites. But God sent them Prophets to warn them and turn them back to Him. What did the mediocre Israelites "stuck in their comfort zone" do to the prophets? Hmmm....?

We are throwing it away because over the decades we have been comfortable in "normal," while setting aside more and more Truth and commitment. "Really don't believe?" Believe what? We have long past the point of recieving God's FULL Truth from the pulpit. For if we had been recieving it, the fathers in the pews would have risen up and stood together to protect their children from the assault on the Truth in government schools. Perhaps they would have found ways to educate their children in the Truth IN THE CHURCH BUILDING which sits empty six days a week. (That's what the American pioneers did.) Look at the results: A DEBAUCHED SOCIETY, FILTHY TV, DANGEROUS VIDEO GAMES,SEX AND SODOMY OVERWHELMING, DRUGS, VIOLENCE, BULLYING, PEER PRESSURE, PERSECUTION OF CHRISTIANS AND BIBLICAL AUTHORITY, HATE CRIME LAWS AGAINST PASTORS WHO SPEAK AGAINST UNNATURAL SEX ACTS.....

"Prefer law" ---Some Christians do believe that "man's law written in government statutes" can fix problems in society. Too many of these laws have been written with disasterous results. Take President Johnson's "Great Society." Welfare laws were written to "fix" poverty in America. It destroyed the black family and is now destroying all families regardless of race. The reason? Government and those administering these programs enable and reward irresponsibility, thus multiplying irresponsibility. SIN IS OVERLOOKED AND THEREBY ENCOURAGED BY THOSE PASSING OUT WELFARE CHECKS. It is the responsibility of each father to take care of his family. It is not the government's role to take take of families and children. It is not MY role to feed the government money so that it can take care of other people's disfunctional families and pay for their abortions. I have my own family to take care of. I'd like to do that in a civilized society, but society is becoming less and less civilized due to the above.

One more example: Laws regarding divorce and child support were written to hold fathers who divorced their wives for younger women responsible for continuing to support the family that they abandoned through divorce. See? We fixed that problem, right? NOPE, WE DIDN'T FIX IT. We educated some generations without enough Truth, they are now in positions of authority, yet blind to justice, common sense, and common decency. You and I both know that legislators did not sit down to write family support laws intending to make it legal for an adulterous mother to divorce a father and keep his children and half of his income. Yet this is EXACTLY HOW THE LEGISLATION IS APPLIED IN THE COURTS AND IN THE ALL POWERFUL BUREAUCRACIES. When the family support laws were written 80% of all divorces were initiated by men. Since we have replaced the father with government, today 85-90% percent of all divorces are initiated by women and the number of divorces has multiplied 4 times. Talk about injustice, ignorance, and "calling evil good and good evil." Chaos---stupidity---suffering---Children do suffer under the sins of their parents,... while the church one day a week fails to teach upcoming generations HOW TO LOVE FAMILY, FRIENDS, AND NEIGHBORS.

"prefer legalism?" Legalism is strict adherance to the letter of the law without regard to the underlying intent of the law, which is to keep the relationships between men just, civilized, and independent. "Love your neighbor" according to the Laws of Nature and Nature's God is the only way to maintain FREEDOM, independence, and peace. Fallen mankind disregards the Laws of Nature when it goes down the path of "legalism." The pharisees tried that.

Vague statement. Too much generalization. Might be something I hear from the pulpit these days. Try this: Freedom is rooted in relationship to God and our fellow man. Relationship requires commitment and effort to adhere to the Two Greatest Commandments.

Good thoughts, Rick!

How can God bless America if America doesn't know God?
How can justice bless America if America disregards God's definition of justice?
How can morality bless America if America disregards God's definition of morality?
How can love bless America if America disregards God's True definition of love which He has preserved for us in scripture?

We need men of courage and wisdom like the founding fathers, and the reformers, and the martyrs Hus and Tyndale who were burned at the stake (by the church, for goodness sake) for translating scripture from Latin into the languages of the common man, English, German, French....

While I don't disagree with much of what you say, I think your emphasis is on man's doing and religious man has created the environment we are in. We don't need more religious men doing God's work. We need more godly men, men who passionately love Jesus and are vessels for His use.

C.S. Lewis said "God gives His gifts to vessels who are empty enough to receive them." We need men and women who are willing to be emptied, to be nothing, so that God can be all in all.

Emptying is humility, the willingness to lay down your life. That's the Jesus life. That's the life He longs to live through us, in us, for us.

Freedom is knowing and living in His love. We need men and women who are free!

Boy, I don't understand what has been said here....

Are you saying we need more George Washingtons, or not? Was he a "religious" man, or a "godly" man?

What about, John Adams, Ben Franklin, Thomas Paine, Patrick Henry, and Mr. Smith in Mr. Smith goes to Washington? What are they? Were they empty enough to risk their lives for the freedom of their posterity? Have not millions of men laid down their lives in defence of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? Don't the fathers in this country today wish to provide a prosperous and free future for their children? Isn't that exactly what our Father in heaven wants?

Just as in the Old Testament, when men forget the Truth, lack faith to stand on the Truth, and forsake their role of loving, leading, teaching, providing for, and PROTECTING their loved ones, GOD WILL PROVIDE AN ENEMY TO ENSLAVE THEM AND WAKE THEM UP FROM THEIR STUPOR.

So, from your post above I have no idea what you expect from Christian men. What do we do? LAY DOWN AND LET UNGODLY MISGUIDED GOVERNMENT MEN TRAMPLE ALL OVER OUR HUMBLE SOULS AND THE FUTURE OF OUR CHILDREN?

Yes, C.S Lewis is right in pointing out that we must be empty of pride and worldly wisdom. But that doesn't mean we stay empty and stupid, it means we refill on God's Word and be renewed into a strong confident men of faith and love. That way we can put on the armor of God and stand against lies and deception that seek to enslave the minds and bodies of our children....

Well, let's look at Jesus or Paul.

Both were very unconcerned about the misguided Roman government they lived under. They paid taxes. They obeyed their rulers. They instructed us to pray for them as well.

But I don't see them concerned about the 'trampling of their souls' one bit. In fact, Jesus did lay down His life, not fighting back, not threatening, not rebuking or retaliating. He humbly submitted to the cross. And if we don't understand that as submitting to the wrongness of others (as well as to the rightness of God), we are missing His point.

So what is the point of this post? We lay down and let ungodly men trample the salt of the earth? Is that what Jesus meant when he said this?--
Mt 5:13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.

Seems to mean He is speaking about a backslidden apostate church here.

And you and I both know that Paul would have loved to convert Caeser and any other ruler he could get to listen to him.

Gee... if we hadn't lost our saltiness we might have Christian leaders like Jefferson, Washington, Lincoln, Reagan....

Oh, as for the "Jesus laid down His life, not fighting back" His Father told Him to so that He could raise up men of God, SALT, not icemelt!

Ponder this: Lk 22:36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.

Do you suppose Jesus is hinting that we might need to defnd ourselves like the founding fathers did?

Yes, RC, fathers who break the marriage contract through adultery or otherwise MUST PAY TO HELP REAR THEIR CHILDREN.

Likewise, mothers who break the marriage contract through adultery should not be rewarded with child custody and half of the father's income. Why not protect the innocent and punish the guilty?---Simply return the children to the responsible parent who loves them and will make every effort to raise them with wisdom and love so that they will know how to raise their children with wisdom and love.....

Why have a government that encourages irresponsibility and the destruction of the family, painfully affecting multiple generations?

How convienent for for Dad, whose responsibility it was to keep the house in order to begin with.

I have explained this to you before. I do not know what provoked you to argue it again.

But here: I was baptised at eight years old, but was not surrounded by men who were joyful wholesome leaders and teachers in their family and the church. However, I did love and expose myself to scripture and was seeking understanding. Also during this time, the churches in town were deader than road pizza. NO LIGHT THERE! I grew up doing the same things everyone else was doing in High School while my friends and my future wife ALL CLAIMED TO BE CHRISTIANS. And compared to the dead churches, we were Christians.

When my first son was born, I thought is was time to grow up and leave behind the congregation in the bar. My ex didn't want to. She had a "NEED" for that social life and being the center of attention, not wanting to miss out on any "fun" at the bar. We argued and I tried to lead my family in the right direction. She did not want to go. She loved her barstool congregation, and I had no help because the congregation in the churches were joyless and deader than road pizza.

When she decided that another fellow had greener grass on his barstool she went with him.

I went to the Bible and found that it was my role as a father to lead, teach, love, provide for, and protect my family. I was repentant and sorrowfull for failing. I was also given the wisdom to understand that my parents hadn't found the joy and wisdom of the Lord, either. Her father didn't train her up in the Truth either. The fathers of the friends I grew up with and loved failed to train them up in the Truth, too. This could have something to do with government taking over the role of "Training them up in the way they should go." Since my peers were not trained in the church, they moved the congregation to the bar. Now the old people stand alone in the church praying for their offspring. I wonder how typical this is in small towns?

Then I found out that a judge's father had failed to train him up in the Truth, too. He thought that "love your neighbor" means take children and income from not-at-fault fathers and give them to at-fault mothers. What a mess! What can little ol' Rusty do to correct this nonsense? I did the best I could. I spoke the Truth and stood firm on it while a maintained a loving wholesome relationship with my sons.

Repent dude! You know what I am saying is True. Sin and irresponsibility are being rewarded with free rent and perverse application of child support laws. YOU KNOW THIS, YET YOU RESIST THE HOLY SPIRIT, choosing to attack me rather than the sin, and the lack of love and justice. You are not helping my ex by siding with her. You are not helping fathers who want to do the right thing, but have their families and their role as father taken from them by untaught unChristian adulterous mothers. You are not helping the children of these broken homes by allowing them to remain in shack-up homes with various boyfriends coming and going. YOU ARE IN ERROR! WAKE UP! REPENT and seek first His kingdom, so that you can teach others to find the joy of living happy, wholesome, and joyful lives in the kingdom of Truth.

WOW! Too much nonsense, fluffy fog, and babies milk for too many generations!

Yes, you are absolutely right. The world is evil and does much evil. But Jesus is ruling in the midst of it all. Life is unfair. Judges like the one you encountered act worldly. They know no difference. And worldliness abounds. And God said it will, it would, and all the more until Jesus returns.

So I will ask you, Rusty, how is the 'judge' you encountered in the courtroom like the 'judges' Jesus encountered while living on earth?

And what was Jesus' response?

And what does all of this have to do with freedom, your freedom?

I certainly agree with the Scripture you posted, and part of the wicked ways that many men in general do is to refuse to support thier children, because the disagree with a judge, and cannot face the truth that if a woman runs around on the husband; then it is the fault of the husband for not having his family in order.

Evidently not loving the wife the way Christ loved the Church.

Well, let's see. Jesus had a plan. His Father gave Him a GREAT plan. First, Jesus would teach the Truth and stand up for it. He demonstrated the power of Truth and love right before the eyes of thousands of people, because he loved them, and the Father loved them and wanted to demonstrate his love to them. He rebuked the misguided Pharisees and they got angry. People were turning to Jesus instead of to the Pharisee's enslaving deception and nonsense. God said to Jesus, "You must trust me and carry your cross to the end and I will give you victory and all men will be drawn to you." Wow! I love this plan! Jesus was like me, though. He said, "Father take this cup from me. Yet not my will, but thy will be done."

So Jesus, stood firm to the end and got nailed to a cross for it, BUT BECAUSE HE WAS INNOCENT (the innocent Lamb of God) God raised Him to life again!!! He sure surprised those Pharisees! Now they were going to have to put the whole church on crosses if they want to get rid of Jesus and the Truth! They never succeeded. HE IS THE KING! Blessed is He who sits at the right hand of God!

Before He went to the Father, He spoke to Peter and told Him to feed his lambs and take care of His sheep. Peter took up his cross and did it, even unto being crucified upside down. I guess the Truth made the Romans mad at Peter and Paul, too. Boy, that Jesus taught some powerful Truth! This Truth sure raised up some strong courageous men. And these men believe in a ressurection. They don't care what idiots do to them, they know they will get eternal life, while the idiots will get... "NOT!!!" Perhaps we as Christians ought to take up our crosses and teach the Truth, too. I know a judge who needs some. How about an exwife, and my two sons? A president, a bunch of congressmen, some entertainers, too! Perhaps we can be a light for them, too!
My goodness, I wonder if it does any good to continue beating my head against walls!

At the least, can't we (the church) get our act together to be salt instead of icemelt? Maybe we can save some of those idiots! Good grief!
