This is a nostalgia thread...

I used to love getting ready for the new school year! I loved getting new school supplies and I would arrange them ad nausea in my brand new school box. (Remember the red, blue and yellow ones that came nested together?)

We never had much money, so we usually didn't get new clothes, but we always got a new pair of shoes after being barefoot all summer. My mom always took us to Buster Brown for that.

And then I always looked forward to seeing which teachers I got and who was in my classes.

Since I lived in a pretty small community it wasn't about seeing friends or teachers, since we would run into them from time to time all summer long. It was about getting new school supplies - I've loved the smell of new crayons to this day! My parents made it special taking each of us kids out on our own or with just one other sibling to get what we needed. Quite a challenge for them since they had anywhere from 3 to 10 kids in the house at any given time. My parents also never really bought us a bunch of new clothes each year, but we always had what we needed.

That bus pulling up to the end of the driveway was a big moment each year too!

Blessings,

Garsy

My favorite part of starting school was when we would all get to walk together every day and then go into our classrooms from the year prior and the next grade teachers would come in and call names off of their lists. That is how we found out who our teachers were. Things are so different now though. Now at my daughters school, they post the class lists on the door near the beginning of the year and we have to go and look, so we do know before school starts who our kids go to, but it isn't the same as sitting there waiting in anticipation for your name to be called and your best friend would hopefully be called by that same teacher, but that almost never happened for me. I think my best friend was only in my class one time and then in 5th grade, we had science together, but in 6 years of being in that grade school, that was it. I also remember that we had no hot lunch program so EVERYBODY brought a lunch. This was a public school system so this dates me a bit. But nope. No hot lunch. Oh wow, I can just see the inside of that school now and smell it.

Great thread!!!!

This is a great thread.

Let's see...if I was going to the same school as I did the year before I loved getting new school supplies, the fresh smell of pencils and erasers. I don't know the ages of everyone here, but when I was growing up we collected the little cute erasers, like Hello Kitty and stuff like that. We always had seperate boxes for those and never used them.

I always got new clothes and it was fun deciding what to wear with what. The clean smell of my vinyl lunch box and knowing that my ham and cheese sandwich was waiting for me.

The worst was going to a new school. I started a new school in seventh grade and went from a very formal school (people wore suits!) to a school that really didn't care; my school in Hawaii had over 1,000 kids in my grade. In Illinois there were less than 100.
