my kids have always been homeschooled. We just had a graduation party for my oldest daughter who finished up her classes and did o.k on her ACT praise God..... now I have a daughter going to eighth grade and a son who will be a junior in highschool.They have never ever been in school. and next year my husband wants them to go to public school because online christian school is getting too costly and we have unxpected dental bills so he wants to save money and send them to public school I feel so torn if this is a good decision or not. I am afraid that they will fall into peer pressure and turn away from God. my daughter is very self conscious and my son loves school and i think that will change if he enters school. does anyone have any advice reassuring words encouragement?? I am very anxious need to visit the schools this week and talk to people.

My dd was hs'd until middle school. It was a hard decision to make. However, I prayed and prayed. Her father (we are separated) did not want her to go to public school. I really didn't want her to either, but I was forced to take a job working outside the home.
There have been positives and negatives, but the Lord has led us this far and I know He'll continue to lead us. I will be in prayer for you as you make a very tough decision for your family. ((((hugs))))

Do you have a friend you can pray with? If so, ask them to pray with you that your husband’s mind will be open to the Lord. Then the two of you need to have some good long talks about what is best for your kids first and then consider the financing; which is an entirely different prioritizing than starting with the money and trying to fit school in.
You also need to ask yourself if YOU are ready to graduate from paying for an online school to a different, less expensive style of homeschooling. I can attest that if you are willing, you can assemble a good program that will cost less than what you will need to spend for public school. (e.g. As homeschoolers, my kids went to school barefoot in warm weather and wore socks in the winter. I figure that alone was a $100 shoe savings per year!)
The 'trading school for teeth' reason sounds a little implausible as a chief reason to stop homeschooling. Why do you really homeschool in the first place? There are other ways to juggle finances if you are willing to look for other options; but in the end, people usually spend their money the way they want to. I think you and your husband ought to get really honest about what kind of education is best for your family and go from there to find a way to make it happen; whatever that may be.

How much are you paying for on-line school? From what you said, it sounds like it must be very expensive. My husband just had a ton of dental work done. He was very concerned about the cost, but I knew somehow the Lord would provide for dental work and school. My husband's dental work is now all done and we have purchased pretty much everything we need for school in the fall. God provides for His children.
Perhaps this is simply the Lord's way of moving you into a different way of schooling or at least a different curriculum. It seems extremely radical to me to suddenly put the children into a public school rather than looking into other options.

If you are concered, just keep praying and praying! Keep yourself calm, but inform your husband with constant communication about your feelings. And... pray some more.
If they are in school, pray God's protection on them. I knew one family that had the mind set that if their spiritual walked slipped, they would make the changes needed to bring them back to homeschool. Maybe you and your husband could have a similar agreement.

I see two more options besides PS--homeschooling cheaper without the online Christian school, and becoming part of your nearest cyber public school (they pay for the materials as long as they aren't religious).

It sounds like you are not totally sold on the idea of sending your children to PS, so I am going to address that a bit.
Do visit the schools like you had planned. Do you have a choice of PS to send your kids to? Some places do. There aren't any options of PSs where I live.
I would make sure that there aren't any hidden costs. I have seen in the PS forums that many of the schools make you pay them for supplies at the beginning of the school year and it can be pretty expensive in the the higher grade levels. then there are the colst of the supplies that you have to buy for them, and then there are the clothes, and if they take any extra curricular activities, they can often really cost you in gas, food, equipment and such.
I would start a thread in PS asking how much clothes, supplies and stuff tend to run them and compare. I have found that many people end up shelling out more to send their kids to their "free" PS then I do on my expensive hsing curriculum.
I am not trying to discourage you. I just want to make sure that this wasn't overlooked. I used to think that PS was free until I began to notice how much stuff people were buying and how much gas and time they were using because their kids went to PS. It can be rather costly.
Are you going to be a SAHM or are you hoping to get a job for extra income, or do you already have an outside job?

I agree - there are many other ways to homeschool that will cost much less than the online Christian school. If your husband is willing to send them to ps without even looking at the other options, I question his commitment to homeschooling them in the first place. I have spent very little money homeschooling over the years. As with everything else, you will either spend time or money. If you insist on an everything-done-for-you kind of program, it's gonna cost you some cash. If you are willing to do some searching and pull things together yourself, you can homeschool for almost nothing. Finances are a poor excuse to give up homeschooling.

I was shocked to find this out, but have had several people who send their kids to public school tell me how much it costs.
I will admit that I spent a lot of money on homeschooling this year, but that includes the cost of a microscope, lab speciments, microscope supplies (like prepared slides), etc. That equipment ran us into the hundreds of dollars alone. I also purchased an entirely new writing program. Basically I bought everything and anything I wanted for school this year.  A few months ago, I didn't know how we were going to pay for school this year, but when we found out we were getting the tax incentive check, I spent the entire thing on school. However, this is by far the most I have ever spent for homeschooling. I think it will probably be the most expensive year ever, since most of this stuff is not consumable.
My children are being well educated and we normally spend less than $1000 per year for all three children. Sometimes less than $500. I know there are many here who would think that is extravagant who are doing a good job with their kids also.

It's not only the clothes and other costs, it's the time spent on homework after 3 in the afternoon. We homeschooled ds until last fall and sent him to the Christian school for 8th grade. He would be in school for 6 hours and then I would have to show him how to do the math when he came home. I didn't mind helping, but sometimes homework would take a couple of hours. When we homeschooled, we were done by 3 every day. Some days, we were finished by lunch time. We could put the books away and do something else.
If you have an 8th and 11th grader, you could combine most of the classes. You might need different math books. You could decide what the oldest needs to learn in order to graduate. If he needs to study World Geography or U.S. History, then let her study the same subject.
You could probably keep track of any high school classes she does and put them on her transcript.

I completely agree with Cynthia on this. There are other options without having to give up on hs entirely. There are plenty of other options to cut back in our American lifestyle without having to sacrifice our children's education. It seems like an opportunity to stand in faith together as a couple for the sake of the children - especially after investing for so many years in providing them a quality hs education.
I really hope that you are able to approach your dh and respectfully keep the conversation going on this.
