Nicole...if he is gassy all the time then it could be something you are eating that is making him be like that. I would suggest keeping a daily food diary of everything you consume for a few days and see if you see a connection to what you wat and when he is or isn't as fussy. Also I doubt you are producing too much milk and that he isn't getting hind milk. You might think that he isn't, but if you are feeding him off of one side per feeding and he is eating for longer then 5 minutes total then there is a good chance he is getting plenty of hind milk. You can tell by the sucking....how does he suck? The foremilk will be rapid sucking (gulping, almost like choking with some babies). The hind milk is more labored and drawn out sucks...kind of like the difference between you sucking coke through a straw and a milk shake through a straw. You can see your cheeks doing a different kind of sucking when it is the thicker milk shake...same with baby when they get to the hind milk.

He'll definitely do a lot of the choking/sputtering unless I have him in a position where he is above my breast or on my side (it can dribble out that way). Half the time he gets so upset that when he finally settles down and starts drinking well, he is exhausted and falls asleep. I have to undress him/diaper him to wake him, but that doesn't always work either. He is gaining weight well, so I guess he's getting plenty...

I may have to try the food diary thing. Milk, soymilk and onions are all things I eat that I have heard can cause gassiness, so I might just cut those out for a couple weeks and see if it makes a difference.

It might be better to just do the food diary first without cutting anything out. That way you should be able to be see right away what it probably is by noting the time of Caden's reaction, and checking back (the ladies here can tell you how many hours before it's likely to be). It might not be any of those three at all.

I would add to that list any known gassy foods (beans or cabbage), and tomatoes or any acidic foods may upset their tummy's too.

I also agree with Manda about doing a diary first and not cutting everything or you may never know what it is causing it.

Ladies, I need some help. I have only been nursing David for 5 days and I am ready to give up. It hurts so much I just sit and cry the whole time he eats. He isn't latching on right and he falls asleep constantly while eating. He never empties a breast during a feeding session. He sucks, falls asleep, I wake him, he sucks a little more, falls asleep , etc. I try to nurse him at least an hour and I am still engorged after. I use my hand to get out some of the milk to help with the pain. My nipples are also cracked and bleeding/scabby eventhough I use lanolin all the time. I am exhausted and in so much pain. I don't think I can do this any more.

My midwife and the LLL leader have both been here and tried to help. I have tried everything they have suggested and nothing has helped.

Can you call a lactation consultant or your midwife to help? If he is not latching right, that is probably the problem...and unfortunately, that's hard to help with online. nevermind...crosspost

Keep up with the lanolin before AND after each feeding and set a short goal...like stick it out for another week and see if you can keep going.

If I could just encourage you for a minute....that very first week is the hardest because of YOUR exhaustion at having just given birth and all YOU are trying to recover from.

It DOES get better. It really does. If your mom can care for David while you sleeeeeep and she can wake you when you need to feed him (then you go back to sleep while she tends to him), that will really help.

I had my MIL come over for 2 days that first week so that I could just sleep. I was still exhausted, but it did help.

I promise you that your nipples WILL not be in such agony forever, though I know firsthand it feels so raw and awful. After one month I personally didn't need lanolin anymore and my nipples accepted it that this was how it was going to be.

And also, know that WHATEVER YOU DECIDE, we're all behind you cheering you on. (((((EMILY)))))

One of the only things that kept Timmy awake when I was nursing him is someone putting ice on hisleg or foot when he started to drift off. The getting him naked and changing his diaper and thumping his heels didn't really work.

One of the latch problems you may be having (which can cause bloody nipples) is him not latching completely i.e. only having your nipple in his mouth and not most of the aereola. When you try to get him latched on, make sure his mouth is open WIDE and you're squishing your boob like a sandwich to make it flat. Depending on the size of your aereola, he ought to have most of it in his mouth and starting off that way. He shouldn't start with just the nipple in his mouth and suck the rest in. If he doesn't latch complete, try it again, but don't let him nurse halfway latched. That will make your nipples worse. You may need someone to support the baby's head while your squish your boob with one hand while your pry his little mouth open wide with the other hand. It took three hands the first week with Timmy..he was pretty tough. You CAN make it through this. If you have to, put neosporin on your nips, but be sure to wash them off before you nurse again.

Another latch problem I'm not sure if you're having....Is he panicking and rooting but just not getting on there? Did the hospital send you home with one of those sugar water bottles? You can try squirting some of that stuff on your nips to let him know that it's coming. Or, if you can hand express onto your nipple....But, I don't know if that's what you mean by latch problems?

Nicole (lilly) A thought for you (I mentioned this in the Baby chat) since you mentioned you have to position him above your breast. To me part of his issues MAY be related to a fast flow. I read some tips on kellymom that really helped me.

Would I be a horrible mommy if I quit trying to nurse? I sit and try for at least an hour at a time and he barely gets anything. I am in so much pain. Also, he isn't having enough wet/poopy diapers. After I spend an hour trying to feed him I can still easily pump at least 2 ounces. I really just want to give up and pump and feed him with a bottle.

He was born weighing 9 lbs 8 oz. The next day he was 8 lbs 14 oz. Yesterday he was back up to 9 lbs 4 oz. He is gaining weight back but he is not eating and only has 1 poop and maybe 3 wet diaper a day.

NO! You would not be a horrible mommy! I got so fed up with trying to convince Marshall to nurse that I pumped exclusively for five months for him. I definitely made things tricky, but it is doable. If you decide to go with formula your not a horrible mommy either!

You are a wonderful mommy who is learning what is best for you and your little one. Keep seeking out support. In the VAST majority of cases it does get easier. Set a small goal (like make it until Friday) and then re-evaluate. Don't make a hasty decision, but know that you are NOT A HORRIBLE MOMMY!

If he is gaining weight, then he is getting milk.

No, you would not be a horrible or even remotely bad mother if you stopped nursing him. However, I encourage you to think back and try to remember how much you wanted to nurse your baby. If the desire was not strong, maybe it's not worth the fight to get it down. But if the desire was strong, maybe it is worth it to commit to one more week at least. No one can answer that but you, Emily.

(((((((((((((Emily))))))))))))))) Still praying for you.

yup..I second what Donna said. It depends on you and what you deep down want. The first week is always the hardest...it does get easier over time and if your desire is to nurse then I would encourage you to stick to it. He is gaining weight, so he is getting milk...he isn't in danger of starving to death. As far as his peeing goes.....are you measuring (weighing) his diapers to say for sure that he isn't peeing any more then that? Sometimes it is very hard to tell if a diaper really has been peed in unless it is several pees all in one. So he very well could be peeing more then that and you just not realizing how much he is.

As the others have said, if David is gaining weight, then he MUST be eating, and MUST be getting enough. It could be that you produce quality, as opposed to quantity. Which may also be where there isn't much poop.

You really ARE doing well, even though it may not feel like it. This time next week you will feel a lot more capable than you do right now - it's honestly a day by day thing. Hang on in there.

Pain-wise for me the first week was the worst.

He's gaining, so he's getting enough to eat. You are doing a great job!

My youngest was born weighing 9 lb 3 oz. At one week she weighed 8 lb 3 oz. It took her another two weeks to get back up to birth weight.

Remember that pumping and then bottle feeding has it's own set of difficulties. It's truly easier in the long run to feed straight from the tap. I agree with just setting short goals and then reevaluating.

Are you still engorged? Pumping is going to prolong that because it tells your breasts to make more.

Yes, some babies just don't poop very often. Their little bodies use the breast milk very efficiently.

Pumping and bottlefeeding is harder then nursing, although it may not seem that way now. Also the cost of formula could really stress your budget if it's already tight. Having been through nursing hell, I would say to stick out for 3 weeks until you are at least past the "baby blues" and can think clearly without being clouded by hormone changes.

I nurse-pumped-supplemented for 4 months, it's not easy and I know it's stressful. Definitely keep trying!

If nothing else, you could try a nipple shield every-other session just to get a little relief, but don't use it everytime.

Yup. My chunky monkey only poops a couple times a week. My skinney minney still poops 3+ times per day at 2 years.

(((((EMILY)))))

Our son didn't have a wet diaper (that anyone noticed) until about 2 a.m. on Wednesday morning and he was born Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

David is doing so well to have lost and then gained back so much! Good for BOTH of you! You are doing a great job!

I know that it is really taxing that first week, for sure. Right now you're still a patient....still trying to heal from DELIVERING A BABY! That was a huge feat for your body and you're healing from that. I'm sure you know that your body will continue to feel better as you get further from David's actual birthday. So that is improving little by little.

The exhaustion from feeding baby that first week -- yeah, it is really tiring. Our son is only 3 months old but I remember that first week and putting a fed baby in his crib only to have him start crying 5 minutes later and getting up to try to nurse him again. All it was was DH and I figuring out what baby needs and when. It did not take long at all before our son was eating every 3 hours, 8 times a day. But just KNOWING THAT made a huge difference.

Right now it IS exhausting for you -- I'm so sorry, and I know we all feel your pain, we really do -- but you ARE making much more progress than you give yourself credit for. So you take a minute and give yourself a pat on the back. That little boy is GROWING -- and it is BECAUSE OF YOU. You got him here, and you are making HUGE sacrifices right now while recovering yourself. You're doing all of motherhood very proud, Emily. You just remember that, okay?

Absolutely not!!!

I know it feels like he barely gets anything, but he obviously is because he's gaining weight!! He couldn't be doing that if he wasn't getting anything.

Basically I agree with everything everyone else has said, but I thought I'd post anyway, just in case you needed to hear it one more time.

We are so proud of you and you should be proud of yourself too! This is hard work, especially the first week. You are doing a great job!

You know, taking care of a baby wouldn't be so hard........ if you didn't have to also deal with a long and hard labour, stitches and the pain that goes with that, engorgement and the pain that comes with that, nipple pain, hormone changes, lack of sleep - shall I go on? And really, any one of those on it's own would be hard to deal with, but we need to deal with it all at the same time! So, yes it's hard! BUT IT GETS BETTER & EASIER I PROMISE!!!!

I just flinch for you when you describe what you are going through. Are you using Lanolin before AND after his feeding?

Know that you are Not a bad mother if you decide to go with formula instead of breast milk. I know plenty of healthy children who were bottle fed soley. Remember how pathetic I was the first MONTH? I think plenty of people wanted to shake me because I was so lost and SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO overwhelmed. It wasn't until I listened to the ladies about SURVIVAL that I finally felt normal.

I wish one of us could come over and help you figure out how to get David latched on properly so you won't be in so much pain.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I GOT The Bebe cover and I LOVE it. I kind of regret that I wasn't able to wait for Sarah. The material is a little itchy and it would have been nice to have one that is reversible... BUT I LOVE IT!!!! I humbly believe that it's a MUST HAVE for all breast feeding momma's. It covers wonderfully and I am able to see Jadon to re latch him without embarrassing either one of us. I can't say more about it!
And, I discovered that Jadon can't handle tuna. But he can handle pizza! So no spaghetti, tuna, or seasoning with basil, parsley, or lots of garlic. Oh and nothing spicey or hot. Period.
