Growing Fuschias in Hot Areas (Anyone Tried It?) - 6/11/2008 6:12:14 PM

My grandfather grew gorgeous fuschias in San Francisco, which has the shady, cool, misty weather that fuschias love. I grew up and still live in the much sunnier, hotter, much drier Great Valley of California, but I really love fuschias. Fuschia growers seem to have developed varieties that can adapt to the hotter, drier climate, so I'm trying one -- my test specimen -- in the shade. I have it hanging in the branches of our small four-tree redwood grove (our redwoods themselves are quite large -- 4-5 feet around and extremey tall -- so provide much shade). So far, so good, but it's just been a month with milder-than-usual weather so far. What are any tips or hints based on your own trials with fuschias (if any)? Thanks.

Did some checking...
Look out for triphylla fuchsia. They tolerate full sun and shade so may work for you.

My daughter lives (will be moving to NM last of June) in Alaska. Last year when I was there she had beautiful fushias in several colors. I live in hot and dry West Texas. The information that I found on fushias said that they like to have their roots kept cool. That will never happen here!
