I was skimming through The Rules of Wealth in the bookstore today - looked interesting at first glance and I was very tempted to buy it for my almost 18 year old daughter. Unfortunately, I was not really taught money management/ wealth generation skills when I was growing up and I suffered for it. I don't want history to repeat itself with my children but I certainly don't have the information/ skills/ successful to teach them myself. The Rules of Wealth looked like the kind of advice I wished I had received in my early adult life Please let me know - is the book any good? Or would you recommend something else? Thanks in advance for your input

I second Harvie's advise. Crown's offerings include materials tailored for teens and young adults, with a combinaiton of books and workbooks to help a person through the process of developing a budget. Dave Ramsey is also another good resource.

I haven't read it, but you've got me curious. Nothing wrong with reading secular financial advise, you've just got to have the wisdom to filter it and decide if it really is good advice. So many financial advice books are published for the purpose to sell something... seminars, subscriptions, or more books on more "methods". If it's that type of book, you'd do better to buy a subscription to Money Magazine, Forbes, Businessweek, etc.

Maybe your local library has it and you could check it ot to get a closer look, and then decide.

ORIGINAL: Harvie I would recommend anything and everything by Larry Burkett and Crown Ministries. (www.crown.org) -- but my preference is to approach money-management and budgeting from a biblical/christian perspective. Larry Burkett or Dave Ramsey....he's got some great books, as well (and Dave doesn't hesitate to suggest Larry Burkett's books on-air, either), which I think is pretty cool. Speaking of Crown Ministries, the co-founder of Crown Financial, Howard Dayton, spoke at a function at our church just a few weeks back. Nice guy.

I have not read the book, but, it sounds interesting. As far as the other posts talking about Dave Ramsay, well, I do perceive he has a lot of knowledge, but, when you listen to his radio show, it does not really help the average person. Listen to the callers. The people who say they got out of debt usually have at least one person making $50k or more. However, I have never heard the instance where a couple who had 2 low paying jobs got out of debt. C

Dave Ramsey is good but there is definitely better choices. One good, motivating, short read is called "The Richest Man in Babylon". I just finished reading it and it is worth purchasing. Only $5-6 on amazon (Including s+h). Another good book (for life, really) is "The Greatest Salesman in the World" by OG Mandino. Those two books will motivate any individual to hard work and conservative money management.
