Our church decor has not been updated in over thirty years. We recently replaced the overhead projector with a power point projector and moved the table the old projector had been sitting on, clearing up extra space on the platform. The drawer in the table was full of bulletins and Sunday School material--the most recent date on anything was 1974. It was redecorated about the same time they got the overhead projector. We have yellow padding on our pews and purple carpets that are rather worn. Most of the songs we sing are from the same era. This church is like a time capsule of the 1970's. How important is it to update? On one hand, I know that churches can get distracted by being on the cutting edge and having to have the latest in technology. Too easily our focus can shift from the Word of God to the trappings. We want the latest and greatest of everything. Financially, we focus on buying all the great new stuff, and forget about helping the poor and giving to missions and things we're really called to do. On the other hand, does an out-of-date sanctuary bring glory to the Lord? If we invite our friends to church and it's a time capsule of the 70's, does that give them the impression that we are out of touch? We have the latest and greatest in our own homes--why are we reluctant to update the church building?

From the stewardship perspective, I think it is important to have your church be clean, tidy, and well-taken-care-of, and reasonably up-to-date. This means that periodically it is perfectly ok to replace carpet, care for the flooring, repaint walls, expand where needed, etc. There is a balance though like you mentioned between having to be the newest greatest thing, and being a good steward.

The message sent by not updating is the same message sent by an individual not taking care of his body (if health permits) and comming shabily dressed (one can find nice clothes at Goodwill).

It is definitely important. Especially along the lines of fire and safety codes.

When we installed the power point projector, I was telling someone about it, and she thought it was wasteful and that we should have given the money to the poor. She got all emotional about it, teared up and everything as she talked about how churches today buy all sorts of unnecessary stuff that they don't really need while there are suffering people in this world.
