Do you know of any other gyms that you can join?

I get no sympathy, huh? I live in a small city, and I already switched to this gym from the other gym to follow my trainer. Due to financial reasons, I had had to stop the training part around November, but I was still faithfully going to the gym. However, I still kept my trainer updated on my progress. This gym is ever so slightly less expensive and less crowded than the other one. Plus it had a room where the whole floor was padded that I could run laps round and round in, and not hurt my joints, and it had a pilates studio that I liked to practice ballet in when pilates class wasn't going on. They were nice enough to let my mom and I have a couple's membership even though it usually has to be a husband and wife or a boyfriend/girlfriend. They did that because the other gym allowed any two people to be a couple, and since we came from the other gym, they honored that. The only other option is the Y, which we may try, and my trainer says he will go there because he won't go back to the original gym because they made him charge people way too much money, and he doesn't want to do that, he wants to help people. Since the Y is way cheaper than either gym, I might get to train again after all, so it may all be good in the long run, but it was still shocking and sad for me today. In fact, I am walking around numb.

Yes, I really did love my gym, and my goal was always to go 6 days a week, but I averaged 3-4. Now that they are closing I am mad at myself for not being more faithful. No, I am not an athlete, but in '97 I came down with a severe case of lyme disease which had many long term mental and physical effects, one of which was a lot of weight gain, and I am doing my durndest to return back to my former self. I'm part way there, but have a ways to go.

Sorry that this happened! I know it's a pain when a place you've patronized regularly goes away. (We used to have a great little sub shop just off campus, practically an institution. And it closed out of the blue several years ago. ) Speaking of campus, are there any colleges near you? Sometimes their athletic centers will offer memberships to the local community. That's what ours does. (I only just found out about that, too!) -Robb Thanks lab guy. The nearest 4 year college is 45 minutes away, and in a big city. Due to some residual mental affects of my illness, I'm not ready to handle driving all the way there, all around the city, and all around the campus. The nearest jr. college is in the opposite direction 30 minutes away. I have mastered driving to that city because my dr. appt. are there, but I don't really like to drive out of my element unless I have to. They only even let me have my driver's license back about 2 yrs. ago. Plus working out around a bunch of college athletes intimidates me.

Thought it might be worth a shot because they usually have nice facilities (it's a big draw for recruiting students) and reasonable rates. Anyway, hopefully the Y will work out all right for you! -Robb

Sorry to hear that, Rebekah. But I agree with going to the Y. Being so faithful is the hardest thing - you are doing it right. Keep on going. This is just a minor setback. Don't let it derail your progress.

That would make me very upset as the gym is my second home in the winter. I wish I have some suggestion for you, but I don't. I know how attach I can be with a certain place. I hope you find one that's reasonably priced. Right now, our place of work has a gym that I use but I'm thinking of getting a membership at one of the Ys here because I feel a need to interact with people. In the mean time, while you're looking around for another place, can you try continuing your pilates at home? I do pilates 3 times a week at home using an exercise video. It's really good for core work out. I have a six pack now that i didn't get from years of working out at the gym. Also, when the gym isn't accessible, I try running, and cycling. It gets me out and enjoy the fresh air.

I'm sorry to hear that, I love my gym, esp in the winter. Some of the local stores are closing due to the economy so I understand how it is to go somewhere and see it closed. I am going to look at bikes today, it's nice out. It depends on what they charge though, haven't ridden in forever. 3-4 days a week is great, that's more than most people! I laugh at all the people that only work out on Saturdays. Our Y's are really nice and wouldn't have a problem joining one if they built one close. They also work on a sliding scale if you can't afford to join. What did you normally use to workout with at the gym? if it's a treadmill or a bike you can come out ahead in the long run if you buy your own equipment and have the room.

Yesterday, they had a p.s. on all the notices that they have had several people express interest in buying the place, so it MIGHT not close. I pray it doesn't!

That stinks. THere's nothing like getting settled into a routine and having it disrupted. My gym is cheap. Crowded, but cheap. And convenient (I have to drive by it to go home from work). Maybe the Y will work out for you. Or whoever buys this gym....but I'm thinking there's likely to be a gap between ownership. Congrats on the progress, btw.

The gym got bought, and was officially under new ownership as of today!!!! They had balloons to celebrate, and they didn't even close one day! I'm so happy!
