I think both should be aware of what is going on but one should handle all the day to day bill paying.

A lot of couples have rules not to spend any amount over x amount without agreeing.

But it depends, you can't have two spenders both trying to manage the account.

Depends on the couple.

I "handle" the day to day stuff. Dh "handles" the business stuff. We both have a general idea of what's going on with the other's side, but not details unless they're pertinent.

both...there is nothing worse than an emergency situation happening leaving one of the two unable to do their usual routine, or a sudden death, and the other person is left totally clueless about financial matters.

We both know everything at least on a weekly basis...The more you can prepare your family for the unexpected the less stress for them during an extremely stressful time.

The key is good communication.

When I get married, he needs to handle the bills and stuff like that. Then say, "This is how much money we have. These are the things we need." and then we work together to stay within our budget.

I think both should be involved however the one who is the most responsible with money (the saver not the spender) should be in charge to prevent unwanted spending of money.

It depends on the couple.

When we first married, we tried doing the finances together but it didn't work out. So I took over the household finances and keep Dh up to date on everything. Major financial decisions are talked about between us, and then Dh deals with them (investments, mortgage, etc)

In our household, I take care of the finances. He hands over his pay stub (it's on direct deposit) and I basically do the rest. He's a bigger saver than I am, so I know he won't go out and break the bank. Once in a while he'll ask me how much is in the checking account, especially when it's about time to transfer some to savings.

I think it's just whatever works for that particular couple. Some are good money managers, some are not. Some are able to do the budgeting together. My husband doesn't care to look at the details every month, just the bottom line. I keep it all organized on spreadsheets so he can see at a glance what's going on. I do all the detailed stuff (balancing, household spending, bills, etc.).

For the most part, I handle the finances because he's often GONE (sometimes for months, sometimes overseas) .... and it just makes the most sense for us to do it this way.

That's us.. I'm horrible with the budget, so I let her take care of the day to day finances...

I agree with those who've said to do whatever works. I pay the bills because I have more free time than my husband and I don't mind doing it. My husband balances the checkbook with a computer program and handles the taxes.

Both sitting down together. I've seen too many examples of one spouse handling everything. It's been either the wife or the husband. If something happens to the spouse who handles the finances, the other is clueless. Which brings up a pet peeve of mine: Women who are so helpless that the idea of taking care of bills leaves them in a dither.

Right now we both do. I pay my bills (cell phone, cc, etc) and then pay him and he pays the rest with that money. I trust he does well, as he is very, very frugal.
