JESSE HELMS died of natural causes July 4, 2008.
I didn't see a thread about the passing of this man..... and his place in American history.

I'm sorry to hear he's gone. I was never a fan of his in office, but he did have a very long tenure, so he must have had many supporters.

"Most people feel like there would have never been a President Reagan had it not been for Jesse Helms."
Still, even some Republicans cringed when Helms said Clinton — whom he deemed unqualified to be commander in chief — was so unpopular he would need a bodyguard on North Carolina military bases. Helms said he hadn't meant it as a threat.

Helms' public appearances dwindled as his health deteriorated. When his memoirs were published in August 2005, he appeared at a Raleigh book store to sign copies, but did not speak.
In an e-mail interview with The Associated Press at that time, Helms said he hoped what future generations learn about him "will be based on the truth and not the deliberate inaccuracies those who disagreed with me took such delight in repeating."
"My legacy will be up to others to describe," he added.
Here is what a close friend of his had to say:

His record in public office is rather pitiful. Hopefully, he was a better individual than he was in public life.

Jesse Helms was a rare politician. By that I mean if he said something on Monday he did not change his position five times by friday. Also he was not ruled by polls. That is why even though I along with others may not have agreed with him on every issue we voted for him. He was wrong on some things however, he was right more than he was wrong. I' ll take over Ted Kennedy, Hillary. or Pelosi any day.

Good riddance.
I do feel sorry for his family. But I can't mourn the death of a man who was a racist through and through, and set your country back from moving forward. David Duke would be proud of him.

In his last few years in office, I appreciated his views on the UN and his efforts to clean the UN up.

I think Helms had his problems, but where do you see that he was a segregationist?

While I think Helm did a number of things I disagree with, I think his views on race were less clear cut than he is popularly depicted. If he was so against segregation, why would James Meredith, the first black student intergrated into Ol' Miss, have been on his staff?

Let's just say: Mr. Meredith served his purpose. And apparently well, judging by your question.
When looking at the whole of Mr. Helms' political career.... Mr. Meredith was an intended anomaly.
I think those who were close to him have averred that Mr. Helms did not change his view points.
Politicians do what they need to do.
Yes, well unfortunately it has become common to label any black person who doesn't follow a certain party line with that moniker (I have heard it used of Rice, Thomas, Powell, etc.)
The reality is Helms did some bad things for political purposes (like his campaign against Harvey Gantt) he did some good things for conceivably political purposes (like hiring Meredith) and he did some good and bad things out of sincere conservative convictions.
Pretty much like almost every other politician for the last 200(0?) years or so. I just don't think a simple label covers the whole picture.

That's okay, Jhud. We simply think differently.
I will say that on a large number of pages on the internet there is active discussion surrounding the incredible whitewashing and softballing of his legacy.
I happen to agree with that.

This article gives a more clear picture of how Helms saw himself. He did not see himself as a segregationist, even though his record clearly defines him as such. More interesting to me is his late life change on the issue of AIDS and cooperating with Bono.
