~Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me~ Psalm 41:9 Does this verse speak of Jesus talking about Judas? I have heard it taught before that Jesus and Judas were actually quite close before the betrayal. Does anyone know if that is true?

It's referring to Ahithophel the Gilonite, David's cousin. 2 Samuel 15:12

You are both right, actually. 21 Sam 15:12 is the original cause for the verse in Psalm, but it was also prophetic, and quoted by Jesus in John 13:18 in reference to Judas' betrayal.

Oh, thank you! I will go look up that verse now. I wonder if they were close friends? Any idea/insight?

So, do we have a Hebrew idiom here. How peculiar!

He was one of the 12, which was likely close knit. From the beginning, though, Jesus knew who he was and what he was to do. Off the top of my head, I would suggest using a concordance and looking up any verses with Judas' name, or do a study on Jesus' interaction with the twelve. While I haven't read it yet, John MacArthur wrote a book about the apostles called "Twelve Ordinary Men", with the last chapter discussing Judas (the book is sitting beside me and is next on my list once I finish his "A Tale of Two Sons"). Hope this provides you enough of a lead. Let us know what conclusion you come to.

As with many references in scripture(and life)this is another example of near(cousin), betrayers(Judas and the disciples)and the nation Israel.

~Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me~ Psalm 41:9 I did a word study on the above verse. Familiar friend indicates Jesus believed there was safety in the relationship. Then Jesus says He trusted Judas. Which did eat of my bread indicates the intimacy they had at mealtime. This is all mind-boggling to me. Jesus still was calling Him friend when Judas gave Him the betrayal kiss. Whether or not the two had a closer relationship than Jesus had with the other apostles, I don't know. If Jesus knew from the beginning that Judas was going to betray Him how could He put His trust in Judas and call him friend? I just don't "get it".

Let us know what John MacArthur says when you have finished, please, OK?

ORIGINAL: Bluethread So, do we have a Hebrew idiom here. How peculiar! What does that mean? Sorry, for the tongue in cheek humor. I was just pointing out that Ps 41:9 being a reference to prior Scripture is not an isolated incident, but that the Scriptures are full of idioms that are repeated again and again gaining greater significance each time they are repeated. This, in my opinion is very important when looking at the Apistolic Writings("new" testiment).

Just have to remind you every once in awhile that I am not a scholar But thank you for the teaching! I learned something in your above post! That is good to know! Blessings

Maybe the Father did not reveal to Jesus until the night of the betrayal who the betrayer was? I know Jesus knew all men, but is the above possible? Can't stop thinking about this one

Re: OP - I believe this refers to Judas. I don't think Jesus' relationship with Judas was any different from his other 'friends' (i.e. the other disciples) however, because they all would have been familiar with Jesus also and vice versa.
