Just got this in my email today....
MESSAGE FROM SOLID ROCK - PLEASE READ
Hello everybody.
Our friend and my wonderful brother Larry passed away at 2:45 Sunday
morning. Kristin and I were with him, holding his hands and sitting in
bed with him when his heart finally slowed to a stop. We spent this past
week laughing, singing, and praying with him, and all the while he had
us taking notes on new song ideas and instructions on how to continue
his ministry and art.
Several of you friends here got to come and visit with him in the last
couple of weeks and were a great source of help and friendship to Larry.
Ray Sievers, Derek Robertson, Mike Makinster, Matt Simmons, and a few
more. Thank you guys. Larry appreciated your visits very much. And he
greatly appreciated the thoughts, wishes, support and prayers that came
from all of you Army members on a daily basis. Thank you for being part
of his small circle of friends over the years. Yesterday afternoon he
knew he was going to go home to God very soon and he dictated the
following message to you while his friend Allen Fleming typed these
words into Larry's computer:

I feel like a prize in a box of cracker jacks with God's hand reaching
down to pick me up. I have been under medical care for months. My wounds
are getting bigger. I have trouble breathing. I am ready to fly home.
My brother Charles is right, I wont be here much longer. I cant do
anything about it. My heart is too weak. I want to say goodbye to
everyone. In the past you have generously supported me with prayer and
finance and we will probably still need financial help
My plan is to be buried in a simple pine box with some flowers inside.
But still it will be costly because of funeral arrangement,
transportation to the gravesite, entombment, coordination, legal papers
etc. However money is not really what I need, I want to say I love you.
I'd like to push back the darkness with my bravest effort. There will be
a funeral posted here on the website, in case some of you want to
attend. We are not sure of the date when I will die. Goodbye, farewell,
we will meet again.

Somewhere beyond the sky.
I pray that you will stay with God

Thank you to all of you who were so nice to my brother over the years.
Kristin and I will post funeral information in the next day or two.
Right now we're not able to function very well, but the whole family is
here... our mother Margaret, our sisters Nancy and Kristy, Mike Norman
and his new wife Tiffany, and Silver.
We miss him beyond words. Thank you for everything.

Oh man...I'm crying as I type this. My wife and I were saved back in the Jesus Movement of the early 70s. Larry's music, along with some others, spoke to us like nothing else could. But "Jesus is the Rock and He rolled my blues away." God bless you man. Rock on.

Suspense Writer...I can relate...I cried when I heard the news. I to was saved in the 70's. Larry was the first music I could play for my non-christian friends that they didn't make fun off. I grew up on Zeppelin and the like, church people would say if you like Zep, we have the christian equal...try Petra. Petra didn't rock like I was used to rocking. (thank goodness Rez came along). But there was something real about Larry's lyrics and the honesty he presented.
The sad thing is that the majority of kids today have no idea who he is or was. CCM does such a shabby job of remembering it's past. It's is really the only genre of music that does not honor the pioneers....so sad.
When was the last time you heard anything about Larry, Randy Stonehill, DA, Terry Talbot, 2nd Chapter, et el. All the ones I mentioned except for 2nd Chapter are still touring and recording music.
Did you know that Roby Duke passed away a couple of months ago? Another talented member of our music community forgotten.
That music was of a special time.....

Oh wow. That is sad. Larry Norman was the first person I ever got into when I was introduced to Christian music in 1979, after I had become a Christian. His friend at the time, Randy Stonehill, was another one. His lyrics were amazing, they always stood the test of time, sheer poety. He was honest and clever. You felt what he believed, and it was real. I knew he was not in the best of health for a while, but this was a shock. I even met him after a concert in Seattle in 1982. Nice guy.

He was probably my favourite Christian singer though I was born in 1970. I am grieved for his family but jealous of him and where he is now.

I got to see him in concert twice. Once in the '70s and again in 1998. Both good times. His song "I Am A Servant" is one of my favorites of all times. Thank you God for Larry's life and the music he left behind.

I just heard about this via email from Christiandiscs.
I became a Christian on Feb 3, 1980. I day I got saved a friend gave me 2 albums: Bob Dylan's "Slow Train Coming" and Larry Norman's "In Another Land". As you can probably tell Larry had a big influence on me as a young Christian (I was 17).
I don't know what to add. I'm very sad but I know Larry's in a better place.
I want "Hymn To The Last Generation" played at my funeral.

I too am saddened by the loss. I've seen him in concert many times.
Talked to him several times. Observed closely how he related with the ppl around him.
He wasn't perfect, but he never hesitated to share the Christ he knew.
I continue to be amazed at how many ppl he had helped into the kingdom
with his music.

Wow! His sincerity showed and his passion and gratitude to God were/are evident in his songs. He caught my attention at a young age for which I am eternally grateful.

I heard the news of Larry's going home this morning. I had known from the forum that he had been ill but didn't know how serious his condition was, so it came as a shock to hear of his passing.
As one who was saved some years after the height of the Jesus movement (1991), I did not have much exposure to Larry's music or ministry till I had been a Christian a few years. I bought one of his DVDs last year, and can really hear his heart for God in his music and spoken words.
Although he will be missed, we can rest in the knowledge that one day we will be re-united with brother Larry in the presence of the LORD.

You know, its is very sad when CCM as we know it today does not remember its past.
Every year, the older artists during the Grammys performs with the younger artists. I don't see this at the Doves nor the Stellars.
Are Christian artists are very, very afraid to embrace the past and are they so far out of left field that people want to forget those who laid the ground work which you hear today? (This is not trying to critique the industry, but I have some concerns about this issue).
If it was not for Larry, Andrae, Chuck, Keith, and many others, people like Jeremy, Toby, Casting Crowns, Mac and many others would not grace the stages today and CCM as we know it would not be possible. These artists of the past paid the price for these younger artists to have successful careers in the industry.
I knew of Larry's issues with his health and many times, I read of his accounts that he was flat broke because he did not have aduquate health insurance and there were benefits that were held to pay for his medical bills, yet he was forgotten. I just hate to see an artist who gave so much to the industry to be forgotten.
You know, the Rhythm and Blues Foundation, the Music Cares Foundation and the unions look out for their artists when they are down and it is high time for the CCM and Gospel music industry both to make an effort to look out for their own.
I pray for Larry's family that they take comfort that he was a servant of God. And yes, I am rejoicing that he did transition to heaven singing with the likes of Danniebelle (Hall), Denny (Correll), Rich (Mullins) and many others.
By the way, this week's blog entry is about Norman and how the CCM industry should do a better job in remembering its artists.

Yeah it is sad that he was so neglected.
But the GMA has a hard time looking to the past because of its own history. It was started by James Blackwood, JD Sumner, Hovie Lister and others as a promotional tool for Southern Gospel. Andre Crouch joining in 1970 casused a mini-riot. For much of the 70s there was not even a dove award for CCM, but in the 80s that all changed and they completely edged SG out. They had to start up another award for themselves. Again.
So neglecting one of the true pioneers does not seem out of character to me.

I grew up listening to Larry and I got to see him perform many times. I cried like a baby when I heard the news of his passing. I can't wait to see him in Heaven.

The funeral was wonderful. It was a celebration of life, and a testimony to the love, and saving power of God. People came from literally all over the world to be a part of the celebration. There were lots of stories (mostlly funny), pictures, video, and music. There was of course lots of music. :-) There were even sing along times. The reception included boxes of cracker jack. :-) It was a great home-going celebration for a life well lived, and a testament to what God can do through a willing spirit that says "yes" to Him.

My thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends and numerous fans...I remember hearing his music when I was a college student in the late 70/early 80s...even getting to see him in concert at the Towson Center in the 80s.....I know he's leading the choir now in heaven.

I started listening to Christian music back in the early 70's when I taught, with my wife, a senior high sunday school class. Larry Norman was a super christian artist and I introduced his music and that of Rez Band, Keith Green, Petra nad anyone else I could get at that time to them. I heard larry three times at different festivals, I was at Cornerstoen when he went on stage with Randy Stonehill. What an awesome time that was. I'm teaching a 30's class now and played "Wy Don't you Listen to Jesus" this past Sunday and talked about larry and then I picked the Praise songs for church and sang with the Praise ateam as we sang "I Wish We'd All Been Ready" I also talked about Larry and his fathful witness to His Lord Jesus and the effect he had on my life. WE will miss hin greatly, but he is back to perfect health and worshipping His Savior with all the other saints who have gone before
