Dh and I are thinking of relocating in the next couple of years to be closer to family. The nice thing about his job is he can decide where he wants to go and transfer. I went to hslda's map to see which states are close to family and have good home school laws. I was so shocked to see how great Michigan's laws were. The cost of living was another plus. The only downside is trying to tell DH that the winters are not that much colder then here they just last a bit longer.

LOL Michigan has no laws for home schooling compared to some states. I am in Michigan and all I did was call my dd public school and tell them we are home schooling now. That was all I had to do. I don't have to keep any records or report to anyone.
The cost of living is low compared to some but the job market stinks. But your dh already has a job, so that won't be an issue.
The winters are cold but aren't near what I remember growing up. We don't have blizzards like I remember having as a kid. I have lived here my whole life and have seen all types of weather. We just had a tornado go through our park in June. We do get all 4 seasons.
Would be nice to meet ya if ya come this way!!

Since DH would be moved to an area that is a city I have looked at that Grand Rapids area for housing. WOW! I thought we had a low cost of living. I was disappointed to see only assistant manager positions open instead of managers. But if this is Gods will it will happen. I would love to homeschool my son there since he does much better learning with hands on instead of an open book. That would be so much easier if I did not have to figure out how to write it down for the records we have to keep here in Missouri.

I am in the metro Detroit area and the job market stinks. Even the automobile industry has gone down and many shops that supplied parts has gone down as well. I have never been on the western side of MI so I don't know the market over there. I do know that over all, MI has a very high unemployment rate.
I am having a hard time just finding a part time job. I can't even begin to think how it would be if I couldn't depend on family for help sometimes.

I saw that you are from SW MO- well the winters are a little longer here....they start in October and end in April....It just depends on the year, though. Ds and I were driving in Se MI and got into a whileout in October. the same year, about 3 days before Christmas, the kids were outside having a silly string fight and there was no snow on the ground. We lived in Joplin for about 7 years. You could tell your Dh that there are benefits of living in Michigan in the summertime. You don't need to run the air conditioner at night. All you do is put a fan in the window. It usually cools off to around 60 but we are about 15 miles from Lake Huron..good in the summertime but we do get something called Lake Effect snow....Not a lot because we are inland a little bit.... Gas is about $3.89 a gallon but it's been higher...

Even though Michigan doesn't require records, I would still keep them. We are planning on homeschooling for high school this year. Ds went to a private school last year so I didn't have to worry about records. The problem with MIchigan is that a lot of people seem to mind everyone elses' business...If they see something that they don't think you ought to be doing, they call the police or protective services....MO is a lot different to homeschool in- I loved homeschooling there- It seemed like there was so much more that DS could do there...before we moved, we were going to join a big homeschool group in Joplin.. i was trying to talk Dh into moving back there, but he can't take the heat in the summertime.

I am from the West Michigan area(Grand Haven/Muskegon area). I have lived in Michigan all my life, while my hubby has lived...well everywhere... including MO where we have several relatives, some of whom homeschool as well. We love Michigan though. My mother homeschooled some of my younger siblings but the laws here have changed a lot over the years[for the better I think]. I have 2 kids. Dd1 is just starting college this fall and I homeschool Dd2, who has begun 5th grade.
I agree with Judii1 that, while keeping records is not required, it is still a good idea. They do not need to be super detailed esp. with lower grade levels. I use homeschool tracker to keep records[you can use the basic version for free]. It's great because I can keep track of assignments and resources, as well as things like field trips and chores.
