What do you guys and gals think of Max Lucado?

I've heard a lot of people either love him or really dislike and disrespect him.

Those that love him and tended to say he is very touching and sheds light on intimacy with God. Those I've known who dislike him say he writes fluffy stuff and that he writes way too many books and they seem to be cranked out every month and aren't very high in quality.

Thoughts?

As a missionary, I love his books. They may be simple, but I wouldn't catagorize them as fluff. I like simple, with day to day illustrations, as it allows people to see how God works on a 'real' level. My experience is that an indigent farmer who is lucky to get his family fed is more likely to 'see God' in daily circumstances he can relate to than to understand him in a scholarly, almost unattainable way. Max Lucado writes like that, more often than not.

He takes a most complex subject (Jesus), and puts things into terms that an average person can understand and relate to. Just don't listen to his self-read audio books while driving. The guy's real laid back and cold put you to sleep if you're not careful!

The beauty of Spiritual Truth is that it is both simple and profound at the same time.My favorite Max Lucado book is "When God Whispers Your Name".Do you realize that God knows you by name? That seems simple enough, because God knows everything, right? However, it is also profound to think that the Maker and Sustainer of the Universe knows me by name.He cares about me.That's why I tend to give Max the benefit of the doubt, even though I agree that he is not tackling deep theological issues in his books. That's not his purpose. He is trying to convey Truths that can radically change our view of God and His great love for us.

Thank you for that perspective. It makes a lot of sense and gives me a better appreciation of what he is doing. I've just heard so many back and forth "arguments"? about his writing...I guess I should actually check it out myself before I form an opinion eh?

I know where you're coming from.I've heard the same arguments.I know people who think that if you're not reading Calvin's "Institutes" that you're somehow Spiritually depriving yourself.Never underestimate God's ability to speak to you through even the simplest means. The books that have impacted me the most would never make the Christian Bestseller list.In fact most Christians would scratch their heads if I were to list them.I loaned a Christian friend my favorite book one time, and he didn't share my enthusiasm at all.God didn't speak to him the same way He did me through that book.Anyway, let us know how you like Max's books, pro or con. Thanks for the conversation, and God bless you in your readings!!!

I am not a fan for some of the reasons stated in the OP.

He simply is not my cup of tea.

I know he loves Jesus and he serves a part of the larger body with his work.

Wow!! I'm surprised a Church of Christ minister is so well liked in the church at large. Very unusual in my experience.

I read one of his books and liked it. Then I read another one and realized that it was basically the same story with a different title.

So, I don't think he's bad, but I think a lot of his books are very similar.

Is this the Church of Christ considered cult-ish by some? I'm ignorant of some of this, but have only heard snapshot criticisms of CoC...and ICOC.

Here is Lucado's Wikipedia entry, which says he's part of COC:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Max_Lucado

Is this a bad thing or benign for those familiar with the situation. Wiki also says Max was named America's Pastor or some award like that by Christianity Today. I do tend to trust CT's faith direction, so that tends me make me feel better.

But agin, more info. would be great.

I've seen much more praise and support here of Max than elsewhere, but let me just say that the criticism I've heard from some respected friends in the church as well are that Max's conceptions of God at times are too imaginative and not theologically and/or Scripturally based. He is seens avery fluffy and about warm and fuzzies, which are good, but need to be balanced with the complete side of God too. (It can be argued that Max is simply not writing about that side and that can be found elsewhere).....But in general, one of my good buddies who has gone through seminary and teaches Bible studies and actively has interest in this stuff says Max tends to write books of "low" quality that he cranks out every month and are very vague and feel good type of books without much substance. That in itself, even if I buy that, isn't too bad. Like some siad, maybe people are touched in more "simple" ways than something more complex and that might be Lucado's target audience and goal.

On the other hand, the questionable image of God is potentially a more serious concern. Is Lucado's work too focused on a "nice".."loving"...."warm" God and not about the seriousness of sin and God's wrath and justice? Is there room for balance there? I don't know, because again I haven't read him and have tended to shy away from his books.

I've tried to read one, but it was too much of the same vague tone that I couldn't get through it. I might try again though out of curiosity. There seemed to be more positive from folks here than negative.

If your Bible is your main source of God insight, you will see all facets of God, His wisdom and His workings. Be it Max Lucado or Charles Spurgeon- the point of reading a Christian author is complement your understanding, not to replace it. There might be any number of problems with any author, but through your Bible reading, you can study and understand the author's viewpoint, strengths and weaknesses, and use scripture to balance them... food for thought.

He is one of the most popular authors right now, so there has to be more than just Church of Christ people reading his books. My sister-in-law is a Baptist, and she loves him.You don't pick up on the Church of Christ legalism in his books, which is why he has drawn criticism from people in that church.

I wrote a review of his book "Just Like Jesus" in which I said it was the only book I had ever read that I wished had 1,000 more pages. Excellent writer - has the ability to put on paper what I can only think. I feel he is theologically sound and writes for the majority (average IQ's). Those who don't especially care for his writing are probably the 'George Will' types (humongous vocabularies). I personally don't like to hold a book in one hand and the dictionary in the other.

Hello to the Forum;

I have never read a Max Lucado book, but I have read promotionals for them.

They are all, "First Century Only." This is from the Pope.
I am a historian of the Churches of Christ, and they changed their religion in the 1960s.

I have written to Max about his problems -- he is younger then me -- but I could not reach him with the Word of God.

Just last night, I had a Max Lucado book recommended to me by a man who I love and respect a GREAT DEAL!!!
I have it reserved for pickup at Barnes & Noble tomorrow.
I'm looking forward to getting my hands on it.

I have 8 of his books and I have His Inspirational Study Bible.
I am not a Bible scholar, but I am seasoned evangelical conservative Christian and I have never come across anything in his writing that is questionable.

I enjoy his writings immensely!
