Have you heard the story out of Massachusetts about the high school girls that made a pact to get pregnant together? Doesn't surpirse me but this is the part (aside from the obvious) that really gets my goat. The superintendent of the school system says this happens because the girls have "low self-esteem and no direction." Just that statement alone is nonsense and outrageous to me! How about you?

What's wrong with this statement? These girls are 16 year olds. They are unlikely to graduate from high school, let alone go on to college and careers. To make any sort of pregnancy "pact" before these girls (and their boyfiends who are equally as irresponsible) are mature enough to handle the responsibilities of parenthood is INDEED an indication of low self-esteem, and lack of direction. Unless their plan was to live with their parents, these girls are bound to be welfare moms mooching off the system. My sympathies are with the children of this immature and irresponsible pack.

I have no idea what the reason is, and why they felt they needed to get pregnant. All I gotta say is, "You got to be kidding me!?"

I kind of have to agree. One of them was even stupid enough to go out and get pregnant by a 24 year old homeless man. I can't wait to hear from these girls 20 years from now and see just how wise they think their decision was.

Well, apparently the motive was that they all wanted to raise their babies together, and they craved "unconditional love". I'm a little confused about your outrage. What do you think a more correct reason would be? Incidentally, several didn't even have boyfriends and at least one of the fathers is a 24 year old homeless man. None of the girls is over the age of 16. http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/jun/19/pregnancy-pact-results-lots-teen-moms/

I feel sorry for them for how they are going to feel 4 or 5 years from now when the reality of it has had full time to set in. I also feel sorry for the children that are going to come from this, but I guess all I can do is hope each of the girls has good family support for the children to grow up with.

I feel badly for them, too...they really don't seem to understand the concept of actions=consequences. And I can only imagine what kind of parenting these girls have had! Now these new grandparents will get to raise their grandbabies! We have a girl like this in our own family. Her baby will be a year old in August and she's now pregnant for the 2nd time! She was raised in a Christian home, but still with very bad, permissive parenting. I wonder if she's figured out what causes this? But what bothers me about the superintendent's statement is the fact that so many things are blamed on "low self-esteem". I can't really think of anyone, off the top of my head, that has "high self-esteem". Most people, if polled, would say they would like to have higher self-esteem. When did this become a crutch to excuse bad behavior and poor decision making?

These girls need to face the consequences of their sin but they won't. The school already provides a daycare. So society as usual must bare the brunt of the actions of these immature girls since they know they can still finish school and have no problems whatsoever. Their parents need to slap some sense in these girls!

Unconditional love? Babies...need. They are a lot of work. Sounds like the result of poor parenting, not a school failure.

No, peter_gunn is right, low "self-esteem" as an excuse is so tired and old. people sin and do the stupidest things because they dont feel good enough about themselves?, please. People do what they do because they are sinners. we are all born with the sin nature, that's what drives peoples behavior

I saw the story in the local headlines, but I didn't really give it much thought at all.

Peter, low self esteem is a reason to make bad choices. You don't feel good about yourself and try and fill a void any way you can. Also, what about the movie "Juno" where a teen pregnancy was almost glorified? What about the high number of very young celebrities having babies? It appears having babies young and not married is the thing to do now. It is so sad.

I've heard young girls say they want a baby so that someone can love them... when in their past they didn't didn't have anyone (passed around from foster family to foster family and had no real parents, home or friends). Psychological things impact people a great deal (I consider self-esteem to be one of those).

My first thought was how many of these girls have a father living in the household that is actively involved in their daughter's life? It is really a heartbreaking story- esp for the innocent babies born into such a world..and they will prob end up in the system if they survive their first 2 years.

They weren't. Teenagers do not have the capacity to reason things out as well as adults (although some adults haven't done so well, either). The homeless guy should be prosecuted for statutory rape and all the biological fathers should be tagged for support. Now you might say why expect a teenaged father to be able to pay support. Well, they won't always be teenagers and they might someday actually grow up and have jobs. They'll have plenty of cash since half the kids anymore live with their parents until 30. : /

If you don't like the term self-esteem. Then what about self-respect. These girls lacked self-respect. They wanted someone who would respect and love them. Tina Turner said it best...

Sadly we have to support them because someone else did not.

They will soon learn that the babies are the ones that need to be loved and won't be able to give the love these girls felt they were lacking. They will find out just how hard it is to get up in the middle of the night and the day to day parenting that these babies require. They have many many consequences facing them for many years to come. I think it is a little too late to be slapping any sense into these girls. What they need, and hopefully have, is a supportive family but I would be surprised if they had that.
