I think at least 14. Depends on how mature the kid is, though. If you are feeling convicted by the inappropriate sections' being in the books, then it's probably best to stop reading the books. You already know your mother's counsel on the matter.

I have to say that I am an adult that liked the Princess Diary movies so I read the books. In the books, the grandmother is an alcoholic. She isn't in the movie. I dont' think there is to much that was that bad. My 15 year old niece read them and I don't remember how old she was when she read them. Maybe 13 or 14? I actually liked them and have seen worse books in our library's teen section, like books with swear words in them and kids getting drunk and having sex. These books were nothing like that.

I read the books but have not allowed daughter to read them even though she watched the movies. She was 12 when I read them; now that she is 14 I would let her but it is not something she would be interested in. She likes more fantasy or Sci-fi stuff now.

Invite your mom to read them with you and suggest the two of you go get coffee or something when you're done to talk about them. Books are there to open us up to worlds and experiences that we might never encounter on our own-- even the lives of princesses with alcoholic relatives. I don't want to undermine your mom but it wouldn't hurt to suggest reading it together.

It was not a series I would have just read myself but it was a bonding moment for us. We have also read a couple of Austen novels this way.

I guess it's suitable for ages 12 and up... It's recommended for all to read... Mia is a lovable princess you'll never forget together with her love life... It's an adventure of a princess facing her obligation to her nation, and personal life. :)

I haven't read The Princess Diares, but I did read The Mediator, which is also by Meg Cabot and I was obsessed with it. Good luck and hope this helps.

i read the series, 14 or 15 i'd recommend. they're pretty good books and they are a good way to open up conversations you might want/need to have. im sure you are a good judge of character and a book isn't going to lead you astray
