No, this isn't the urban legend of years ago. I'm surprised I didn't find anything here upon searching, but you should go to http://www.savechristianradio.com and comment NOW as the deadline is Monday, Apr 28th.

This is near to my heart as I'm involved in two small stations that this proceeding would essentially wipe out.

Here's what I wrote:
There are several things I don't support regarding proceeding 04-233:
1. Community advisory boards are pointless. A station has the right
to broadcast whatever it chooses within the law. The community is not
forced to listen to any station and it has the ability to "boycott"
stations. A station will not survive with no support so it will
either adapt to what the community wants or cease operation.
2. Requiring personnel to be present 24 hours a day will harm all but
the largest stations, and do nothing but reduce the amount of
programming that the public can access. If everyone slept at night
maybe this wouldn't be much of an issue, but clearly our society is
not set up that way anymore. Most smaller stations cannot afford to
hire more people in such a low margin industry so they will be forced
to reduce their hours of operation.
3. Requiring a studio in each city of license would have devastating
effects on the programming the public could access. Only the largest
media conglomerates would be able to handle such an expense. Many
stations would be forced off the air. I can only think that is the
real reason for such a proposal because the only people who will
benefit from such a move will be those with the deepest pockets. The
public will be left with fewer choices from people who don't care
about the community they serve.

Overall, this proceeding has many flaws that will harm the face of
radio for the listening public and I urge you not to pass it.

I see the deadline has passed.

I think the reason that I hadn't heard anything about it is that I don't get a very clear signal on my Christian radio station, so I don't tune it in often.

Perhaps NPR is fighting back with the way Donald Wildmon and AFR did business.

I think radio is dying mostly because of the internet access ..I used to listen a lot but now pretty much only listen to XM online.
