Scott Kalitta was killed in his Funny Car today when the car burst into flames at 300 MPH and went off the end of the strip in a fiery crash. He has a family including 2 sons.

You know, for all the advanced safety features that they now have, I can't help but think that these cars -- particularly the Funny Cars and TF Dragsters -- are always toeing the line of disaster. And with Eric Medlen and now Scott Kalitta gone ... I really hope that the NHRA takes a good, scrutinizing look at the Funny Cars. If things are happening in them that knock the driver unconscious at 300+ mph, no good can come of it.

From the evidence that has been shown on-air Kalitta's car ran through the traps at 300 MPH, then had the body blow off, and the car's secondary parachutes were on (but not the primary one). The car hit one of the posts near the sand trap and that killed Kalitta. The posts made the crash eerily like the one that killed American F1 driver Mark Donohue in 1975 at the Österreichring during the Austrian Grand Prix when his car hit a wood post that supported catch fencing. According to Don (Snake) Prudhomme, Kalitta's Deutsche Post Toyota "broke into a million pieces" when the car hit the pole at the edge of the sand trap that protects safety nets to catch runaway cars.
