And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters. And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so. And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.
(Gen 1:6-8)

Has anyone ever noticed that when God created on the second day that He didn’t consider it good? On all the other days of creation God saw that His work was good but not on the second day. What do you think could have occurred on the second day that would have caused this?

In Messiah,

Bob

The waters He divided on this day have always intrigued me. i have no idea why He is not recorded as saying it was good but perhaps it has something to do with the waters?

I think every time God pronounced something good, it was when a stage of creation was complete and everything was as it should be. Notice that he also didn't say it was good when he created the heavens and the earth, and the earth was formless and void. It's not that it was bad, just not finished. So separating the waters on day two wasn't a finished stage until day three when he also separated the waters from dry ground. He says 'It was good' twice on day three, so the first time is just finishing up day two's work.

I find this to be a very reasonable explanation. Maybe some scribes messed up early on and placed day 2's "it was good" over in day 3?

I find this to be very unsatisfactory. Verse 1 seems to me to be a basic summary statement which introduces the entire creation account recorded in 1:3 through 2:4 and not a specific event of the creation week. Verse 2 is the most puzzling to me and probably merits its own discussion thread. But clearly (to me anyway) there is no specific event of creation week described in Genesis 1:2, thus no need for Moses to claim "it was good"!
