I found a sink hole today. It's about 3 - 4 foot deep, two foot wide and about 3 foot long. The hole itself is larger inside (more would cave in if I stepped there). We have a spot in our backyard about the size of a single wide driveway. A bulldozer must have pushed debris from when our basement was dug. Anyhow, in the last two years, that area has sunk in but it's been stable. At the very head of the area, I found this hole. I've found other holes where tree roots had decayed, but never anything this large. How would you suggest we repair this? I'm afraid my curious dog is going to fall in head first. He weighs over 100 lbs and I'd never get him out! Diane

Sink holes are very common around here. One swallowed a bank and half a strip mall. The key seems to be filling them with large rocks and dirt, then concrete, then pave over. They built Food City over the one I mentioned above. Since it is your yard, I suggest rocks, dirt, topsoil and grass seed. Or maybe plant a pear tree.

I live in an area where there are lots of caves and sinkholes too - it's called karst topography. We had a great big sinkhole develop under a road in my city and it even swallowed a car. I think the big rocks/little rocks/dirt idea sounds good, but don't be surprised if it all falls in again eventually what with the way things shift around under there.

We have had few in our yard, and what we done was took rocks, filled in some of the hole, then fill rest with dirt, and made sure it was packed in there. Then we drove over it few times. Although if you live some where earthquakes are known to happen, Im not sure this idea would work as well, or atleast not last as long.

Diane, you live in the same Piedmont part of GA I live. With the granite and bedrock under us, that's is most likely where some tree stumps were buried. That used to be legal in GA, but is no longer. We had a similar sink hole in the extreme end of our property, along the property line. I just got a truck load of dirt for $120, smoothed it out by hand, compacted it with my truck, and tossed grass seed over it. Haven't noticed any more problems in 2 years.

Thanks for all the help~ We have 'begun' filling in the hole. We had a bird bath pedastal I needed to get rid of, so that was a good start. Until we get it filled, we've covered it with a piece of plywood. Can't get a vehicle back there because our yard is fenced in. APZR, that sounds about right. This was all wooded land until the contractors bought this area 10 years ago and started knocking down trees, adding houses. The area where we have the sink hole is all settling, in a driveway looking flat area. I'm guessing that's where our basement dirt was pushed, along with the trees taken down for the house. We have at 100 or more trees, still, tho. Diane p.s. If I'm missing letters, my keyboard is acting up. So is my washer an my fridge, tho. EEK
