Two thumbs up, 4 stars, and 9 out of 10 whatevers. If you like Bruce Willis being Bruce Willis, within the boundaries of a smart sci-fi action movie, then this one is for you. The sci-fi writer within me was thoroughly geeking out through this whole movie. So many story ideas, so many moral implications... This is yet another good movie that makes me wonder about those who give it a negative review. It seems many just didn't like Bruce Willis, but some others just don't seem to appreciate smart, visually stylish sci-fi flicks. There are some good plot twists, but the movie isn't trying to pull some sort of surprise-ending-within-the-last-five-minutes trick like so many other films aspire to do (though there is a fantastic ending). The "who" of the "whodunnit" is revealed maybe halfway through the movie, but "why" they did it and "how" is the hero going to deal with it are much more important than the "whodunnit". The acting was great, the story was smart, the score was properly mysterious and ominous, the cinematography was perfect. The digital and special effects were nothing groundbreaking, but were completely perfect for the film. The thing that blew me away was the make-up. Whenever a "surry" (surogate) was on screen, the make-up was done so that the actors weren't quite "human", and had a subtle but eerie mannequin look... the actors even affected some very slight mechanical movements, just enough to give the viewer a hint of "machine". As advanced as the surrogates were, they were never human, which is one of the main themes of the movie. There was no nudity, and only a make-out session by two soon-to-be murder victims. The language was very mild, and in fact the only "foul" line I remember was from Bruce and included the slang for male genitalia, though it was actually very funny, appropriate, and thought provoking all at the same time (if you see the film, it is the comment he makes to VSI's "surry" lawyer when she gets snotty with him). For those who care about drugs and alchohol, there is one scene that has Bruce Willis coming home all beat up after venturing out into the real world without his surrogate. He grabs a bottle of whiskey and goes into his room, coming out later a bit tipsy to beat the snot out of the surrogate who is flirting with his wife. Some surrogates are shown "jacking", which is basically applying a cattle-prod like electrical charge to their surrogate, which apparently gives the user some kind of buzz. Bruce's wife has to take a variety of prescribed medications when she isn't hooked into her surrogate. There is a considerable amount of violence. A lot of it is against surrogates who just lose limbs, short circuit, and bleed green hydraulic fluid, but Bruce gets physically beat once, and pne of the main plots of the story involves someone killing surrogates with a weapon that kills their users at the same time by basically liquefying their brains. The resulting bloody mess is briefly glimpsed a few times. I enjoyed the film from beginning to end, and every part in between. It is a worthy addition to the sci-fi genre and well worth $8 to see in the theater.

I'm fairly certain I didn't spoil any of the plot at all, but I admire your dedication to seeing the movie with "fresh" eyes! It is a good one. P.S. As usual, pluggedinonline.com's reviewer offers a completely ridiculous and laughable concluding summary of the movie.

I saw it and loved it! Bruce Willis is not one of my favorite actors but he did a very good job in this, although seeing him with blonde hair was pretty weird. LOL
