After watching the evening news, I was wondering why teen violence is getting worse and worse these days. Here (in Detroit) we just had 7 teens shot while waiting at a bus stop. Link: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/31668085/ns/us_news-crime_and_courts/ Then, of coarse there's Columbine and a long list of other school/teen related shootings. This violence seems to be happening everywhere. When I was a teen, I never remember seeing other teens with guns and hard-core drugs. Gangs barely existed. I just wonder what happened between then and now. I know it's basically just guessing as to why this type of crime is on the rise (since none of us are statisticians) but, I'd like to see other people's opinions. What do you think is the cause of the rise in teen violence?

ORIGINAL: stellaluna Well, for one thing, that happened in Detroit. Last I heard, it was the Murder Capital of the US. I think your question is best put into context of community. In some places, teen gangs and gang activity runs rampant. In others, you'd be hard-pressed to find a teen throw a piece of paper on the ground. I don't want to turn this into an anti-Detroit thread because this type of crime is happening everywhere. And some of it in rural areas. Here's a shooting that happened in Gresham, OR: High school freshman Chad Escobedo shoots the windows out of two classrooms from outside Springwater Trail High School injuring ten students with shrapnel and broken glass, two of which required stitches. His motive was to shoot at a class in which he was enrolled, unhappy that the instructor had called his parents; the classrooms he hit, however, were not his intended target. Here's another one from Hillsborough NC: 19-year-old Alvaro Rafael Castillo opened fire at Orange High School with a rifle and shotgun, shooting eight times and wounding two students. Officers ordered him to stop firing and he immediately complied. Castillo killed his father with a firearm before driving to school in a van. In the van police officers found ammunition, pipe bombs, and other weapons. Castillo will be charged with first-degree murder in the death of his father while charges for the school shooting are pending. Here's one from West Paducah KY: A 14-year old high school freshman opened fire on a prayer circle at his school killing three students and injuring five. These are just a few examples that I saw while researching this topic. Link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_school_shootings Let's keep this thread free from bashing--thank you.

I voted it is a combination of everything. But I would also like to mention something missing from the poll...that of a sense of entitlement. My dog has to go out...I will come back and write more later. I have lived most of my life in Baltimore and have some point of view on this.

I wanted to add this stat. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the arrest rate of American juveniles (persons 18 years of age or younger) committing violent crimes increased from 137 percent in 1965 to 430 percent in 1990. Link: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_g2699/is_0001/ai_2699000191/ Looks like a pretty big jump in the crime rate for this age group. Although, it said later in the article that there was also a rise in adult crime during that time. Sharonjef2007, Yes, I had thought of other reasons too--but ran out of room...lol. A sense of entitlement could very well lead to crime.

There is one factor that was left out of the poll question: Parents can no longer discipline their children without the social services getting involved! When I was a kid in the sixties and seventies, if kids got into trouble at school, they got paddled (hard!) and if a kid got into a trouble at school, then when he or she got home, the parents would whip the kid's butt as well. Needless to say, there was very little school violence then, as compared to now. When I was a kid, I believed my dad was all powerful. It was he I feared to cross. He rarely whipped us kids, but when he did, we sure did not want to experience that again! As a result, all three of his kids turned out great. We are all upstanding citizens. Never been in trouble with the law. More importantly, none of us feel that we were abused as kids. When we got a spanking, we knew it was for not obeying, or doing something we had been told not to do. Kids today are not afraid of being punished for doing wrong, because they are not getting punished when they do. So what if they get ISS? (in school suspension) or expelled? Who cares? They did not want to be at school anyway. Parents can't discipline according to the crime their child commits. But then, when their child is caught doing wrong, the parents get the blame.

Kids are not disciplined like they used to be. We are seeing the results of if it feels good do it that has been pushed down our kids. Here in rural Missouri we do not see the shooting but there are teens on drugs and they party too. As far as violence goes they still do the fist fighting here. We always disciplined our kids so they are not near as bad as some of the kids are but it is an uphill fight every day almost just to make sure they stay on the right path.

Thanks for all of your opinions. Some children these days seem so unhappy and they want to take it out on the world. I'm sure lack of God in their lives has a lot to do with it.

Teen years can be a rough time. Hormones and the process of going from a child to an adult in just a couple of years can be very hard. I see my son where that I am a man and I want to be in charge is at war with the part of him that is still a kid. I have to keep telling him he is not the boss.

From the National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center, quoting from Bureau of Justice Statistics and the FBI. quote:
Although youth violence has always been a problem in the United States, the number of deaths and serious injuries increased dramatically during the late 1980's and early 1990's, as more and more youth began to carry weapons. Since then, however, the tide has begun to turn. Between 1992 and 2001, juvenile arrests on weapons charges dropped 35%; the juvenile arrest rate for murder fell 62%, dropping to its lowest level in more than two decades; and the juvenile arrest rate for violent crimes dropped by 21%. From NPR's All Things Considered, November 25, 2005 quote:
Teens are committing half as many violent crimes as they were a decade ago, according to the Justice Department. Experts cite a variety of reasons for the drop, including demographics, the changing economy and new approaches by police. According to the US Justice Department: quote:
In 1998, 50% of all violent crimes were committed by young people, yet in 2006 only 15% of ALL arrests (including violent and non violent crimes) was of those under 18.

I feel like kids don't feel loved and because of that, they feel like they have nothing to lose. Teens join gangs cuz they felt like they don't have a family, so they 'create' one with the gang. But, the gangs only use them for drugs sales.

I believe it alos has to do with abortion and the lack of love for life. Whne you know that you are "fearfully and wonderfully made" I think you look at life differently.

I think the media and schools teach post modernism - that each person must develop their own standards and there is no actual moral law. The kids are so adrift. Here, a lot of them get into new age, wiccan, occult and whatever because they have a need to find the meaning of life and their place in it. They've often pretty much been raised by the tv.

Yes, the lack of respect for life itself could lead to violence. Cuz if you don't respect life, then hurting people won't bother you.

NPR last week was talking about the results of a survey of lots of US teenagers and about 60% thought they would die soon. That was up from just under 50% 10 years ago. The result: more 'risky' behavior because to them it really did not matter as they would be dead soon anyway.

From the Detroit News: According to a recent report, the Detroit Police Department routinely under reports homicides through omissions and incorrect classification of crimes. The number of homicides was 368 for 2008, for a rate 40.7 per 100,000 residents. While this represents a significant decline in the murder rate from 2007, it still ranks Detroit as the Murder Capital of cities with more than 500,000 residents. And please see my post above. I think teen crime is overstated.

I went with lack of church/religion/Bible study because that is the closest that your poll came to lack of Jesus Christ in the answer. All of the other things come from not having Him in your life.

From the Baltimore Sun: http://www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/baltimore-city/bal-md.ci.homicides03jun03,0,1555876.story City is No. 1 in homicides By Justin Fenton | justin.fenton@baltsun.com June 3, 2009 Baltimore saw fewer killings last year than any other in the past two decades, but data released this week show the city's homicide rate ranked the highest among the nation's cities with a population of more than 500,000. Despite recording its lowest number of killings in 20 years, Baltimore experienced 37 homicides per 100,000 residents last year, ahead of Detroit, which had 34 per 100,000 residents, according to data compiled by the FBI. While the District of Columbia was not included in FBI data, it appears to rank third, with about 31 killings per 100,000 residents. No other city with a population of more than 500,000 came close; Philadelphia had the next highest rate, with 22 homicides per 100,000 people. When smaller cities with a population of at least 100,000 are included in the analysis, Baltimore ranks No. 3, trailing New Orleans (57) and St. Louis (47). An 'honor' I would want to avoid at all costs.

Apparently there is another contender: http://cbs2chicago.com/local/chicago.homicide.rate.2.847736.html Chicago Beats New York, Los Angeles In Murders CBS 2 Chicago October 24, 2008 Chicago is the Second City in nickname and the third in population, but when it comes to murder, the city has the dubious distinction of being second to no city in America. As CBS 2's Mike Puccinelli reports, the Chicago Sun-Times pointed out on Friday that Chicago has seen 426 homicides this year through Tuesday, compared with 417 in New York and 302 in Los Angeles. So why are so many cities claiming the highest murder rate????
