Apparently, a prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing (released in 1982) is in the works.

Ronald D. Moore's Script for The Thing Prequel is Finished!

John Carpenter's original The Thing first scared audiences back in 1982, and now 27 years later an extension of that story has finally been written and is being readied for the big screen. "Battlestar Galactica" scribe Ronald D. Moore (who was announced back in January) told IGN this week, "I did my drafts. They were happy. They have a director and, you know, it's the feature world and I'm not the key player so we just wait and see if they're going to greenlight it or not. I'm not the chef. I'm the short-order cook who comes in and does my thing and we'll see what they want to serve." Well put. Now we just hope it's a good script.

Thankfully, Moore's script isn't the oh-so-reflexive reboot to the classic tales of old, but actually a prequel to original story. Moore said: "It's really a companion piece to the Carpenter version. We're telling the story of the Norwegian camp that found the Thing before the Kurt Russell group did, so it's very buried in the continuity [and] it's supposed to be the other story that you saw part of. So we didn't want to reinvent it. It was really much the opposite. We really wanted to have this flow seamlessly into what he did."

Does anyone think a prequel to this movie is a good idea? I am glad that a prequel as opposed to a remake is being done. I was hoping that a sequel would be made. John Carpenter had said that he could have secured Kurt Russell for a sequel. Maybe if the prequel is a success, a sequel to the original will be made.

Soooooo... according to the Carpenter (1982) remake, will we be seeing how the Norse expedition team came across the titular monster--before (Kurt) Russell's American team came into contact?

I think it will be interesting should Ennio Morricone decides to sign up again for the prequel's soundtrack composition (there's nothing creepier than a simulated heartbeat, electronic score!)!

I was kind of disapointed in The THING. Actually, the original was made back in the 1950s, very good too.

Seems like in newer movies, more gore, less plot. Don't know if I will see it. I did enjoy the basic plot, finding alien stuff buried under the ice.

A prequel to a movie that was a remake of a movie that was based on a short story that had no "prequel"? I think not.

Gee, and here I was hoping that THE THING would remain that rarest of cinematic gems.....a genuinely good horror movie that wasn't beaten to death with mind numbing follow ups.

As for the Norwegian camp, I'd prefer a little mystery. The scenes with MacReady and Doc searching the camp, and the disturbing discoveries.....I'd much prefer to let my mind wander on that....it's always going to be more frightening than what any filmmaker can show you...

Nothing is sacred anymore it would seem.

The original, the one from the 50's that was commented on earlier, was a good movie as well ~ Carpenter did a good job staying close to the original storyline. A prequel though...I'm not to keen on one...

I agree. Your comment reminds me of "Aliens" where Jim Cameron shows the colony on LV-426 both before and after the alien infestation (e.g. Director's Cut). Keeping the middle out allows the viewer to fill in the blanks with one's own imagination.

As for a "Thing" prequel, Ron Moore is a good writer and I'd like to see what he can do with it.

However, IMO, no CGI can match the makeup effects done by Rob Bottin in the "Thing" remake by John Carpenter. They were amazing.
