I run the tread mill, since feeling better. I was wondering does anyone walk or run it? How many times a day, and how long does it take you to do a mile? What speed do you run it on? How high does your heart rate get? My husband says he thinks I go to hard on it? I like it though, I like exercise and endurance. My husband walks it everyday, but thinks speeding it up is not necessary or good. What do you think?

I am not using the treadmill that much right now due to it being good running weather (not too hot, not too cold) so it is my rainy day backup.

I run slow.. I run less than 5 mph but I blame that on having a short stride and short legs. I'm also a newish runner. Also you can raise the incline and run at a slow speed but it will be more intense than no incline.

I only run once a day..and only 3 days a week. Its important to cross train.

Your heart rate is real individual. I try to run at less than 160 bpm but that's just an estimate for me
Over 170 is going up to 90% of my max and you can only work at that pace for a minute or too.

You are only going to hard if you can't breathe, or feel like you are going to throw up.. sweating is good.

An easy run is a comfortable pace you can do for a half an hour to an hour. A sprint is your max speed that you can't keep up for very long. Different workouts have different purposes. Usually people do a mix of a steady run, an interval / speedwork run and a long slow distance run til they train for a race.

remember you speed and level of of fitness is individual.. not sure why your husband thinks you are working too hard unless you are getting dizzy or can't breathe or in pain..

No I sweat, but not dizzy or out of breath, I am short also, about 5'2", but have long legs and short body, do not know if that matters. I think my husband who is large thinks because he does it different than I do, he maybe thinks it is to hard. My heart rate has gotten to 150. My husband is six foot, and a very large man, very muscular. I think it is great you run outside. I used to do that five miles a day, I was addicted to it seriously. That is a good addiction to have though. I am impressed at what you are doing. Thank You for reply, it is very informative.

I go by a heart rate calculator like this one:

http://www.sarkproducts.com/targetzonecalculator.htm

A little more accurate than the 220 - age formula.

I use one for my main "cardio" work.

quote:

How many times a day, and how long does it take you to do a mile?

Once a day, four to six days a week. I'm currently starting back at it, after a layoff. I do a routine that alternates between walking and jogging, based on time, with weekly progression. It starts out in Week 1 with (after a warm-up) a one minute jog (which is 5.0 mph to me) alternated with a five minute walk (which is 3.0 mph to me), for five cycles (30 minutes total). So if my math is right, I'd cover a mile after three of those cycles, so 18 minutes. At Week 4, it alternates 5 minutes jogs with two -and-a-half minutes of walking, so 1 mile would be in about fourteen minutes. At Week 10, it's 30 minutes of startight jogging, so at that point a mile in twelve minutes. From there one just keeps bumping up their mph's.

quote:

How high does your heart rate get?

I rarely check it, I go by "feel".

quote:

My husband says he thinks I go to hard on it? I like it though, I like exercise and endurance. My husband walks it everyday, but thinks speeding it up is not necessary or good. What do you think?

I think it varies more by individual goals and individual atttitudes.

n Yes, Thankyou. I do a mile usually in 10 minutes,I have been anemic and exercise was hard, feeling better but, not up to speed as before. Thank You again. I agree about personal goals, and my husband and I just being different. I do slow the speed down, to 3.0, when it reaches 90, before it reaches the 100 which is a mile, slowing down heart rate. do like you, and bump up the speed, and then lowering it again, at last. I thinking maybe faithfulness is as important as anything. I like to run though, wierd as it sounds, it helps my stress.

I only use a treadmill if the weather is bad and I can't go outside. And sometimes when the weather is bad I go outside anyway.

I don't like running on the treadmill as much as I like running outside. I feel like I have a more natural stride outside. However, when running on the treadmill, I run at 5.0 with an incline of 2. I walk at 3.0.

I try to keep my heart rate between 119 and 156.

Thanks Stellaluna, I feel like running it everytime fear or panic come upon me. Sometimes it is night. I like outdoors also. How far do you run outside or in?

This is a hard question to answer. I was running about 2.5 miles 3-4 times a week, but I got injured back in January and I'm just now cleared to run again. So at the moment, it's about a mile at a time. If walking, I can go forever.

i only use it when i want to lose weight so right now i dont. when i did though i either set it at around 5-6.5mph for constant pace cardio, or as high as it goes for sprints(which isnt the best idea when you weight a lot LOL it keeps shutting off)

honestly, faster is ALWAYS better. if you can do sprints without it shutting down or getting errors go ahead. sprints burn a lot more calories Work=Force*distance=Mass*acceleration*distance.

with sprints you keep acceleration high and the distance you run(since you run faster) is also high hence you typically end up doing something more fun, harder in a way, easier in another, but overall better.

sprints also increase your heart beat like crazy(which burns even more calories) for the moment AND for the rest of the day, and metabolism a bit so they are overall better.

as long as you dont have some kind of medical issue, then they are better.(and as long as your tread mill can handle it haha)

You aren't supposed to do sprints every day, you could injure yourself.. speedwork is done once a week or every other week..

To answer the OP--no, I do not run on a treadmill. I did ONE workout on the 'mill last winter. Everything else has been outside.

Konstantinos--assuming you are running 3-4 days a week, you should do one recovery run, one long run, one speed workout, and one medium distance at an easy pace. Speed work is very hard on the body, and should be limited to only once a week.

i know you definitely have ran a lot more than me but i highly, highly doubt that 10 sprints knock you out for the rest of the week. even the hardest weightlifting doesnt get you so tired
