Twins. Mother drank and did drugs during pregnancy, almost lost the babies at about five months.

Now both sets of grandparents are working together to raise the twins. Dad does what he can, but lives in different city. The mother divorced him.

The kids have about a five word vocabulary, and seem to terrorize other kids. They destroy everything left within their reach, and pets have to be locked in a different room to keep them safe from these kids.

One set of grandparents are friends of mine, and asked me if I thought the twins should be tested for autism. I am thinking fetal alcohol syndrom because of the mother's lifestyle while pregnant.

I have encouraged taking the kids to a doctor and start from there.

Anyone have any experience in this type of situation? How early can problems be diagnosed? I have NEVER seen two year olds this bad, and less communcative.

They need to be evaluated by some kind of early intervention program. Fetal alcohol syndrome or some kind of drug thing seem most likely, I agree.

Two is definitely not too early to work with kids. That's why they call it early intervention.

Um...yeah. Although, my knowledge is limited to a paper I once wrote on it way back in school.

I wouldn't start with "vocabulary problems" though. Some kids talk later than others. Much, much more disturbing is the destructive and bullying behavior.

There are often physical indications of FAS--stunted growth and certain facial features are very common in people who have it, along with developmental problems.

Yeah ... my third wasn't talking at age two, which is why we taught him sign language. His vocab explosion didn't really happen until a couple of months ago (he's turning 3 next month)

Definitely go with the behavioural concerns ... that will also probably elicit a faster response time in terms of intervention.

Yeah... I would be concerned about FAS myself... But regardless of the cause, they definitely should be evaluated and should get early intervention services of some kind.

I agree that the limited vocabulary at age 2 is not a huge concern, but the behavior is.

Start with the pediatrician... also look into early intervention screening through the schools. Every state is different, so the process would depend on where they are. The problem with peds is they often suggest a "wait and see" approach and valuable time that could have been spent in therapy, etc is missed.

These children have football shaped heads. Really long and narrow.

Another reason I am asking is because I read that twins many times have their own language with each other, and sometimes are slower developing language skills.

I agree- sounds like testing should be done asap. I would guess the FAS too. If the grandparents don't know where in their area to call to get something started, tell them to try dialing "2-1-1" (like 9-1-1, only for information not emergency) for their Information & Referral service in the area- they may also find it under First Call for Help in the phone book. If that doesn't work (not all areas may be hooked up yet) they could call the local United Way, many I & R's are run by the United Way, and if not they usually have that kind of information anyway. The local Public Health dept. is a good resource too (they also usually run the WIC programs which could be helpful to them).

How is their comprehension?? (Not their obedience) ... If they are told to go and get something, do they understand the command, or do they look confused about it? (Once again, not whether they actually do as they are told, but do they understand the request?)

As an observer, I think they don't comprehend. Or don't hear. Does not seem to be a two year old's defiant "NO!!" or "MINE!!" type of thing. They just don't seem to realize anything outside of their little world is going on much of the time.

I checked out the CDC's page on FAS, sounds like some of the issues could be related- try checking www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/fas/default.htm. They had lots of information.

I am an EIBI (Early Intensive Behavioral Interventionist) and it doesn't sound like they have autism. I have known quite a few children with FAS, and it DOES sound like FAS to me. Either way, the aggresion needs to be dealt with as it will likely only get worse. I second the motion that they need outside assistance of some kind the fact is the average person just doesn't know how to handle special needs children. Especially when there is aggresion involved.

Another thing they can do is preliminary research (while they are waiting on the assistance) is research it online. I find Wikipedia to be pretty helpful.

And something you can do is PRAY, PRAY, PRAY! These guardians are going to need all the prayers they can get! I hope everything works out for them and these poor children
