Welcome, Yolanda!!

I would say worship is more important because it encompasses your entire life, including praise. If you believe God is worthy, it will come out in every situation of your life. Praise is only one part of showing the worth of God. God expects both, though, so one can't leave out which ever one he wants.

BTW- when you write in all capitals, it is perceived on forums are yelling. Please turn your cap lock off, unless you are angry.

For me personally, both are necessary. I find that I am able to "enter His courts with praise." Once I have been reminded, through praise, of all of the things He has done for me, I am compelled to worship Him for Who He is, not for what He has done. This worship is much deeper, and is entirely an awe for Him with nothing of me in it.

Isn't praise a component of worship? I never thought of praise vs worship as being an either/or proposition.

I'm with SoliDeoGloria...

What's the difference between praise and worship? Living a life that praises God... living a life that worships God... living a life that brings God glory... praising God... worshipping God... is there a difference?

They are both important and necessary to our life with God. However, to answer your question I would say worship. As His Covenant said, our life is to be worship, all of it. And some of that will be praise. But whatever we do, we do all for the glory of God---that is living worship.\o/\o/\o/

I love and enjoy worship and believe both lead to each other.

We can't worship without finding ourselves praising Him and vice versa. They really interplay and interact with each other.

Praise and worship are like the sides of the same coin; praise goes up to God for His edification and pleasure and worship is part of our service for His obedience.

i'd really like to see the scriptural and theological justification for "praise" and "worship" being 2 different (separate?) things...

In doing a really quick search in good old Strong's, I'm seeing a slight difference in the two.

Praise seems to be focused on giving adoration and thanks to God or to a person for what they have done. In I Chronicles 23:50 and Nehemiah 12: 24, 26 the words thanks and praise are together. Jusges 5:2 says, "Praise the Lord for..." Psalm 9: I will praise you, I will tell of your wonders. Psalm 9:9: I will proclaim what he has done.

Worship seems to be more focused, not on what God has done, but on who He is. It very often comes with "falling down: - Ps. 95:6, Matt 4:9, various places in Revelation. In Rev. 6:11-12, worship just speaks of the attributes, not actions, of God.

Rev. 11:17-18 demonstrates that thanks can be a part of worship.

The biggest difference I see between the two is that praise can be given to men as well as to God. In fact, God assigns praise to Israel in Deut. 26:15. But there are lots of places where God clearly says that we are to worship none but Him.

I think this explains my previous response somewhat. Remembering and rehearsing what God has done (praise) reminds me of Who He is, and I can enter into worship - just basking in wonder and awe at the magnificence of Who He is, regardless of what He does.

Yes, it's so true that how we respond in all our daily situations is the true worship that goes up to God. And which speaks the loudest. If we respond in the sacrificial way of the Spirit it goes up as a fragrant offering.

It's easy to think our Church gatherings are the sole measure of our worship of God (and it certainly is part of it) but Paul says being holy and submitting one to another is how we reverence God.

"Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God." (2 Cor. 7:1)

"Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. (Eph. 5:21)

When we offer ourselves up this way we are living the life of worship that pleases God.

"... I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual act of worship." (Romans 12:1)

If we don't purposely make an effort to align our personal lives with the way of the Spirit, then our vocal expressions of praise (our sacrifice of praise) mean very little.

As would I, especially in the sense that I even need to know the difference at all. It seems to me that people make too much of differentiating between them, along the lines of how many angels can dance on the head of a pin.

Worship includes adoration, praise, and thanksgiving. This is not a subject for splitting hairs. And it is not what is important to us finite, mortal, and sinful humans that matters. It is what is important to God that counts.

Nor would I. One leads to another and back around again. I don't believe God cares which one we do at which time, either. If it were important, He would have made it much clearer in His word.

Please see above, post #10. I gave at least 10 different Scriptural references which indicate that there is some difference. If there were not a difference, why two different words?

However, I agree that neither one is more important. Since both are commanded in the Word, obviously we should be doing both. And I do agree that one leads to another and then back again.

Bible Study and doctrinally sound preaching is more important. So many churches places heavy emphasis on their P&W time, band, setup, practices, etc... but their teachings are abhorrent and or problematic.

The irony.

Please see above, post #10. I gave at least 10 different Scriptural references which indicate that there is some difference. If there were not a difference, why two different words?

because the two different words - "praise" and "worship" - are english translations. quoting scripture is all well and good, but what do the original hebrew and greek indicate?

looking at the meaning of those words (using the study aids available - like you did), i agree that there doesn't seem to be a real distinct difference between the two ideas. both involve heart attitudes and physical actions. both can be directed (or not directed) to G-d. both refer to honouring someone (or something). both involve actions or expressions of an interior state and attitude.

the only distinction i can see is that praise seems to more often involve utterance, whereas worship does not (though it is interesting that worship is much more holistic term - service or obedience might be a better expression of the term/ idea). you said that praise focusses on what G-d has done whereas worship focusses on who he is - but i think that isn't really an accurate representation. they're not separate. G-d is what he does.

According to the lexicons in Strong's Concordance, there are different words used in the Hebrew and Greek for praise and worship. The root for most of the words translated into English as "praise" is the Hebrew word which is part of the word Hallelujah - it has meanings such as to shine, to boast, to celebrate. The Greek word which is used most often in the New Testament refers to a commendable thing, something that deserves applause.

The words in both Hebrew and Greek for worship all have to so with prostrating oneself - falling flat on one's face before the Lord.

quote:

worship is much more holistic term - service or obedience might be a better expression of the term/ idea

Not sure I agree with you here. I can't do much in service to anyone if I am flat on my face on the ground. Service and obedience are important parts of our Christian walk, but I don't think they are synonomous with worship.

As far as the OP, I guess I would conclude that they are different, but neither one is more or less important. The important thing is that both are directed toward the One who is most deserving of praise and the only One who is deserving of worship.

Yolanda,

Worship! Hands down. Everyone and anyone can praise God. The Bible says, "Let everything that has breath praise the Lord, praise the Lord all ye lands." But the Bible specifically tells us that those who Worship God must worship Him in Spirit and truth, and that God is seeking such to worship Him. He is not seeking Praisers(sp?); but worshippers. Worship is important, because it is so much more than singing and adoration. It is recognizing God for who He is and acting accordingly in heart, conduct, speech, and thought. Worship and Praise has been confused because of the way we think of it in the context to modern church. There is the praise and worship team, or the worship team, or something like that. But the truth is, worship is much more than singing hymns and adoration. It is something we do every day. Worship is something we do in spirit and in truth. This means only believers can worship. But EVERYONE can praise God. He commands it. Worship is far more personal and special, and far more tied into the Diety of God and our love and reverence for Him in thought, spirit, life, and deed.

To get a better understanding of this, I encourage you to look up the words, "worship" and "praise" in a biblical concordance, and read those entries from your Bible. This is a worth while study!

techne,

Good question! People can worship other gods, but only believers can worship God in spirit and truth. The Bible specifically says that the "true" worshippers worship Him in spirit in truth, and these are such that God desires to worship Him. Unbelivers can worship other gods, because they honor those gods with their conduct, life, thoughts, etc. I've met people who say that do not believe in God, nor do they worship other gods--but perhaps their lifestyle tells me that they worship money, their spouse/significant other/career, position, etc. Worship of God is not something that everyone can do. Worship of the one and only true God is an occupation for believers. Praise is the domain of us all on this planet, from humans to animals, flowers, and the heavens.

I like that definition. and your personal explaination. To the original poster, why is it necessary to separate the two? Aren't we debating trivial matters or matters that matter very little

To have one without the other would be like having the crucifixion without the resurrection. Empty, meaningless, and hopeless.

I believe both are important, too. Growing up, though, we sang about praising God and Jesus, but I didn't see a lot of it. Praising our Father, Son, and Holy Spirit would be the part I'd like to work on more.
