Before I get tomatoes thrown at me here... ...this question is meant to be an honest reflection of social and relational struggles, not a doorway into argument over stereotypes themselves. With that in mind, I'm kind of curious what racial stereotypes people have of other's of a different (or even same if you like) racial group that they find hard to get rid of? .... I will be the first to admit, I grew up in a home where my parents (particularly my mom) did not like African Americans. She was told growing up too that they were lazy and dangerous and always had a kind of fear and even hate at times of them. Our family business was cheated and robbed by black men in the past and that led to even more kinds of stereotypical hate/fear. I was fortunate to have been educated correctly - both in school and through church - but still at times find it hard to let go of the image of "dangerous" African Americans (not necessarily actively violent, but a loose propensity towards violence).....Of all of the different stereotypes, this one is one that I have trouble keeping out of my mind many times. I think it's because there are a lot of the visible black gang member types where I live (out on the streets) that are always in the news for killing people or doing other crazy things that makes them stand out (statistically that is - though, of course, not all African American males are that way). I'm not an active racist, but with stereotyping, this is something I have to actively work on to frequently correct my perception of things. ......With some stereotypes, I do not see or feel them (such as laziness with African Americans, "nerdiness" with Asians, etc.), but with this one I tend to have to always correct myself to make sure I do not sin in this way. So, on the one hand, I do recognize and correct this perception each time it pops up, but it's something that is annoying even for myself, because I find myself having to do it all the time.
