quote:
Finding "Comfort" in the Crisis Cindi McMenamin When my 18-month-old daughter, Dana, awoke from her nap, she didn't seem bothered by the mysterious bruise on her forehead. But I was. It was the tenth unexplained bruise I had found on her body in the last two days. When I called the doctor and was told to bring Dana in immediately for some tests, I was concerned. But when the doctor, after reviewing the tests, instructed me to take Dana to the cancer/leukemia ward of a children's hospital to see one of the best blood specialists in the country, and said I should plan to spend several days there, I knew we were facing something big. As my husband drove the 60 miles to the children's hospital, Dana slept in her car seat and I stared out the window, praying that the Lord would carry us through the uncertain days ahead. I knew my husband and I were being asked to trust God -- trust Him with our only child's life, trust Him with the medical bills we would be accruing, and trust Him with the process He was bringing us through for His purposes. A verse I'd memorized in high school echoed through my mind over the hum of the car engine: "Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. And let endurance have its perfect result that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing" (James 1:2-3, NAS). Consider this joy, Lord, how? I prayed. This is my only child…and I might be losing her! Read the rest of Finding "Comfort" in the Crisis What crisis have you gone through that you couldn't have made it without God's strength and mercy?

Wonderful question, thanks. My contribution would be my mental health crisis (this is just one example of the many cases God had mercy on me). I have bipolar disorder and was hospitalized twice with psychosis. My husband brought my Bible to the hospital. I was trying to read but was unable to make any sense out of the lines and the pages. God understood this and I felt that He didn't mind that I wasn't able to pray only cuddling a book on a physical level without being able to comprehend its content. In both cases He healed me within a week! The doctor said on average it takes months to get that result but I knew it wasn't in my own ability to recover so quickly.

There's been many. But the biggest two was divorce and the loss of a job. I remember days while going through the divorce that I would wake up and just roll right off the bed to my knees. I needed him that much. I had a job that I should be able to retire from.. I had it made.. I made some terrible mistakes and messed the situation up big time and lost my job. God was there. He saw me through. My job situation right now could end any day.. I'll need just as much grace and mercy as I needed back in those days.. I'm trusting him for that.

I agree with agapist's assessment. Thinking back on specific instances, though.... I have reached out to God more demonstratively in times when I had to make a major decision - most often in dating relationships. And also to deal with depression and times of intense emotion that didn't really make sense to me (as to why my emotions were so roller-coaster-y at the time). And when my grandfather died last year. God has always been there for me, but I've not always let Him in as far as I should have. Too often I kept Him at arm's length. Still workin' on not doing that.

Forgot another biggie for me: when I was hospitalized b/c of uncontrollable high blood sugar... and esp. the moment when the IV was put in. (I'm such a fraidy-cat and wimp when it comes to pain!)

The Lord has brought me through many troubles. The year of 2007 was one of the most difficult years I have ever lived through. Feb. 2007 My four year old niece suffered several strokes. Two of those were massive strokes. May 2007 Uncle was diagosed with liver cancer August 2007 Grandmother's health started deteoritating at a fast rate. She had breast cancer Sept. 2007 Four year old niece undergoes major brain surgery. She stays in the hospital for almost two weeks. Grandmother enters hospital. My boss resigns. I am left with all the job responsibilites. Oct. 2007 Grandmother and uncle are told by doctors they don't have many more days to live. Nov. 2007 Grandmother pass away. Dec. 2007 Uncle is holding on by a thread. He ended up dying in January. Through it all God sustained me. I was in and out of the hospital with my niece and grandmother. Some days I felt like I was going to crumble. All of the stress was overwhelming not to mention the fact that I knew I was losing my grandmother and uncle. Thank You Jesus for sustaining me.

ORIGINAL: Fritzpw_Admin What crisis have you gone through that you couldn't have made it without God's strength and mercy? He was there for my first 14 years when I hated Him. He was there for the next years it took me to get my spiritual feet underneath me. He was there through my first husband's death. He was there while our two-year-old son mourned the loss of his father so much that I nearly lost him. He was there through my single years, even at those times when I tried to push Him away. He was there as I reared our children. He was there when my daughter nearly died because of brown recluse spider bites. He was there through some difficult years during that time. He has been here for my husband and me. He has been here for me through my illness. Today, He was here for me specifically as I faced my future and surrendered it to Him as fully as I can at this time, knowing that there will be more times of surrender in the future. Praise G-d! He has always had it all in His very capable fatherly hands!

The Lord has carried me through many a crisis! I don't even want to think what I would do without Jesus! The most difficult time was in 2005 when my beautiful 29-yr-old daughter passed away. With one hand, I shook my fist at God and asked "Why?", with the other hand I reached out to him for comfort. He wrapped me in his arms and still carries me through the sorrow. He reminds me every day of the hope I have. I will see my daughter again. She loved Jesus. She is alive with Christ.

Wonderful testimonies, it just makes me think how come people who don't believe in God refuse to see His works that are so obvious and only the spiritually dead can't see the manifestation of God's love in front of our eyes. Let me briefly mention an example. My brother-in-law was a chronic alcoholic a few years ago. He had been drinking for decades when his organs started to fail, from liver shrinkage to severe diabetes. They gave him a few days to live, and God had mercy on him and with His grace and help he put down the bottle for good from one day to the other. He's still living. My family of bunch of atheists thought it was some kind of miracle out of the blue, shrugged their shoulder and moved on. It's amazing to see how God delivers even people who totally refuse Him and unwilling to admit they couldn't have done it themselves. He still can't see the obvious. Let me add another miracle of the Lord, this man became the nicest dad and granddad you ever want to know, the very person who used to abuse his family for decades.

Age 15 - my boyfriend was killed by a drunk driver - no way I would have survived that without God 2006 - healed my marriage and bestowed forgiveness after the affair I had during a manic episode 2006 - held my in His hands through a suicidal trip to the hospital to present - carries me every day as I navigate the wonder of bipolar disorder, aided by medications He gave the doctors the knowledge to create. There are many more, but those are the biggies

Only God could save a dying, desperate alcoholic, give him a productive life, the most beautiful, compassionate wife in the world (I pray you other husbands feel the same about yours! :)) - and that's only the icing on the cake. The king of the universe had a personal interest in me, and saved me from hell I deserve. Just that personal, every day. God bless you brothers and sisters

Wow, so many wonderful testimonies! Ok, now for my list... The Lord helped me survive abuse at the hands of a perverted uncle and the ability to finally forgive him; sustained me through a neglectful father; protected me through a rape by a stranger when I was 13 and helped me forgive him as well. He protected me when my fiance' left me for another guy when I was 19, protected me from an violent, very abusive bf and kept me safe when I ended up homeless because of him. He gave unconditional love to my parents (mom/step=dad) not to give up on me and took me in when I needed refuge. He sustained me when I unknowingly married an angry man, buried two babies one after another and when my husband had an affair and abandoned our 5 year old daughter and I with no support. The Lord then provided for my dd and I through the very lean times despite no support and provided a way for me to finish my degree. He granted my deepest desire by bringing into my life the most wonderful Christian man to be my husband and my dd's father. God has taught us this past 4 years to fully trust him as we've struggled financially, mentally, emotionally or spiritually in the business world. God has provided for our family when we've lived way below the poverty line all the while trying to keep our business going. He provided medicines when my husband needed prescriptions for MRSA knowing that it killed his brother at 17. The list goes on and on I cannot begin to tell you just how many trials and difficult situations the Lord has brought me and my family through. He never promises to keep us from these difficult times but helps us through them all. I know that someday I will be reuinited with my sons that are now with the Lord and my dearly loved step-dad who is there with them.

There are so many, but here's a fairly recent one. My marriage. We were on the brink of divorce about a year ago but the Lord has been helping me see my own selfishness and how my ways needed to change -- not only in marriage but trusting the Lord through good and bad. I'd say last year has changed our marriage in so many ways -- a lot for the better but we're still a work in progress. I have definitely been taught through this experience how marriage isn't about "me" and it's all about honoring God and my spouse. Still something I fail at. I can definitely relate to the scripture that tells us to pick up our cross and follow Him daily; and how we're to die to self and follow God's will instead of our own. But the Lord has been good; He's really working in my life and marriage.

Cancer scare 7 years ago and more recently a situation where someone died in an accident which involves a close loved one. This particular situation has been ongoing for over 2 years now and has still to be concluded. Normally such situations are concluded within a year or so but not this one. There has also been a lot of media coverage and the whole situation has been extremely difficult but God is faithful and promises that 'a bruised reed He shall not break and a smoking flax He shall not quench'. WOW,...I gave my life to the Lord 29yrs ago this month, and the Lord has been faithful through every crisis I've gone through, but reading yours, it seems my struggles were nothing...(and I've been thru alot ) However, I'm reminded as I'm reading all these wonderful testimonies, that God will remain faithful to ALL who belong to HIM. Psalm 121 1I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. 2My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth. 3He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber. 4Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. 5The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand. 6The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. 7The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. 8The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.
