I was recently baptized and I learned all about the symbolism and purpose of getting baptized. However, I am curious to know why was Jesus baptized and what was the purpose and symbolism for him to do so??

Matthew 3:15
And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness.

The people at the time of Jesus needed miracles and super-natural events in order to believe. I suppose like people today ... but that's another matter.
When Jesus was baptised the heavens opened and "the Spirit of God" appeared like a dove and a voice said: "This is my own dear Son, with whom I am pleased". (Matthew 3:16-17). Later John the Baptist said: "I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven and stay on Him". (Read his full testimony in John 1:32).
So I suppose Jesus was baptised in order that others may see and believe.
I believe His baptism was giving approval of John's ministry and showing dedication to His own. He was identifying Himself with the people He came to save.

Jesus was baptized as an example to us. Jesus was baptized as an act of obedience to the Father. Jesus was baptized to identify with us as sinners in preparation for His death on the cross three years later.
God bless all who submit to Jesus as their Lord and Savior and are obedient to His instruction that they be immersed (what baptism means) in His name.
