I looked at the Nuby bottles too, but David was getting fussy so I didn't have time to shop long. I tried the MAM bottle last night and he drank 3 oz in 6 minutes!! It takes him 15-20 minutes to drink 3 oz from the Playtex nurser. I realized this morning I have slow flow nipples for the Playtex and medium for the MAM. Should I get some medium flow nipples for the Playtex? We plan to still use them for breast milk, but he has 2 formula bottles a day and it is hard to mix the formula in the drop in liners. I have to use a separate container to mix the formula and that is a pain. I also don't like having to throw away so many plastic liners.

I always mixed the formula in a separate container - made up all the day's bottles in one go, and it wasn't a problem. quote:

We use powdered formula, I never have had a problem mixing it in the liners. I add the water, however many scoops of formula powder, then shake. We make each bottle individually, that way we have less waste and the temp is easier to regulate.

That's how I mix mine Ryanne, I put the water in the liner, add the powder, and shake. Emily, there are "Variable" nipples available for Playtex, those are our favorite. They are also called "Tri-cut" They can get a little flow, or a lot, depending on their suck, I like them even better than the fast nipples.

We have a formula mixerthat works really well, but not in a drop in liner. He only gets 4 or 6 oz of formula a day. He gets a formula bottle before bed, one if he wakes up in the night, and one if we are away from home and I run out of pumped breast milk.

What kind of formula are you using? We've similac, enfamil, and Parent's choice and have not had a clump problem yet... maybe it's the water. Weird.

Emily, it never mattered what brand of formula we used either ... if it was powdered, it clumped!! The only way it didn't clump was if I made up a few bottles worth in the blender ... but then it had too many air bubbles or something, because they would throw up twice as fast if we used the blender, even if it had been sitting in the fridge for a few hours before use! We gave in and switched to the concentrate with #4 ... no clumps (yay!) But then found out ds was very allergic to cow's milk and soy, so ended up using goat's milk and vitamins!!

I bought a box of liquid concentrate, and I don't like it as well as the powder. It's a pain, you have to use the whole can, and it doesn't make the right amount of bottles for us, there's always half left over. It's easier in our house just to do the bottles with the water and add the powder. Oh, I just thought of something, Emily, what temperature is your water? If you use warm water it is much less likely to clump. When I use cold water it always clumps.

We use cool water to mix. Mary seems to drink it better cool. Right now we use the Parent's Choice but once I can get our WIC checks fixed we will use the Enfamil. We did not like the Carnation Good Start (I think that's the one). That is what we got in FL with WIC and it had a tendency to clump.

I don't know if you have the same brands as us, but I used SMA (powder) and it never clumped - I either used a fork or a hand whisk to mix it up. I used warm water to mix as it dissolved better, but no more than 2 or 3 bottles at a time, and then put all the bottles in the fridge. My dd however liked her milk ice cold from the fridge. I found that out by accident one night when I forgot to warm it first (for my ds, I'd boil the kettle, put some hot water in a jug and just stand the bottle in it for a minute or two to take the chill off).

Good Start always clumps, IME. Which is part of the reason we never tried it... it probably also has soy

You know, whenever I read the threads about mums breastfeeding their babies way over a year, I am just so glad that I fully bottle-fed my two (from 3 months and 6 weeks respectively). It would have driven me totally loopy to have been still having to nurse, especially even once at night, let alone two or more times. All credit to the ones who have felt able to do it, but I couldn't have done it.

I also can't imagine being the *only* one able to feed him, and never being able to go anywhere without him, and having to worry about nursing in public.

I can totally see where you are coming from. But not all of us are like that. I never really nursed in public, and he was eating a lot of solids from 6 months on. He didn't nurse at night past a year (I think). And we were able to go on dates without him, as much as 4 hours. It is taxing though. Having nursed one baby to 15 months (but only once or twice a day near the end), I'm afraid to admit that I am more nervous about nursing the second baby, now that I know how much work is involved. I'm totally on board with bottle feeding being easier, even though I believe in the benefits of breast feeding. I know this is the bottle feeding thread, but I'm kinda scared to go over to the other threads and admit that I'm not totally ecstatic about nursing baby number two.

I nurse David for about an hour a day. I nurse him in the evening and it is more of a comfort thing for us. After his hour of nursing I still have to give him 2 oz of formula for him to be satisfied. The rest of his feedings are with a bottle. He gets breast milk in 1/2 of his bottles and formula in 1/2 of his bottles. I like that we can go out and I don't have to worry about nursing. Also, my mom comes over sometimes and watches him for a few hours so I can get things done around the house and run errands. As long as I pump before I go I can stay out for 3-4 hours if I need to. I really don't enjoy nursing. It has been painful for me from the beginning. I have talked to my midwife, a lactation consultant, and the local LLL leader and none of there advice has helped. I think it is important that he get as much breast milk as possible, but he eats a lot more than I can produce. Formula keeps him full and happy so it is working for us.
