When you go away on vacation or you're out sick,does anyone cover you at work? I work for a billing company,but am on site at a hospital. And when I'm out,no one covers for me. I wanted to take a week off sometime soon because I feel really burnt out,but then I think about how much work I would come back to and I think "it's not worth it". I'd think about all the work I had to do when I got back from work. But then on the other hand,I'm getting more stressed out and I'm not taking a vacation. It all comes down to the company not wanting to hire another person to help out with vacations. They are being cheap.

No one covers for me, but if they need something, (desperately) it would get done.

I don't know, I never take off. I've had this job almost a year, but I temped for 2 years before that. I took a week in June and didn't get to catch up because of the upcoming corporate audit. The day after the auditors left, I was in the emergency room with a gallbladder surgury being scheduled. I took two weeks for that, and still feel like I have never caught up.
I don't have good habits, no one seems to know my job description and everyone else waits until the last minute to ask me to hurry up and help them.
I'm scared to take off for more than a day or two.
If something needs printed, they will print it. If it needs scanned and it is smaller than 11x17, they'll get it. If it is bigger, they'd copy it and mail it the old fashioned way. If they can't find the data, they would ask 3 or 4 people who may be able to pull it out for them. Or they'd wait.

I'm in a bit of a different situation than you most likely, but noone covers for me at all. I usually work a couple of hours each day when I'm on vacation. Went to hawaii and was up every morning at 4am doing the day's phone calls to get them out of the way before my family woke up.
It's not really that uncommon in this economy to have minimal backup capabilities for any one position. It's a pain in the neck, but a vacation still does the heart good even if you suffer after that for a couple of days.

Well, some of my duties are things we have a few people doing, so whoever is there does it. So, for instance, if I have an interview scheduled for a particular day and then am sick, someone else will take it. The only time it is really an issue is if it is a weekend and there were only going to be two people scheduled... we always want at least 2 people there, so you are expected to try to find someone to cover for you.
But then I have some personal projects and if I am gone, no one works on those--but they aren't the kind of thing where work piles up.

I don't have a particular person cover for me, but we do have others in our office area that I can forward my phone to when I am out for any length of time.
I leave a message on my phone and email that I will be out, and I do check messages every other day so that I can answer easier questions before I return. I usually try to work ahead on what I can and leave some information I think may be needed where someone can retreive it easily. Other than that, I just deal with it all when I return.
I think a break is important. I worked for two years without a vacation on a previous job because I was afraid of what would happen when I was out. By the time I took a vacation, the stress level was rough on me. Even if you decide to split your week over a long weekend, say Wednesday through Tuesday, it would probably be beneficial - especially since you seem to need a break so badly.
Artemis - I hope you'll be able to find someone to replace you who can speak Spanish. I was a student who had a replacement teacher for maternity leave in Spanish class. We had three different substitutes, one who didn't speak Spanish, one who spoke both Spanish and French and kept getting them confused, and one who spoke Spanish fairly well. We were so glad to see our teacher when she came back, but we did manage to survive by working together to help each other learn. Those who caught on quickly helped the ones who didn't.

For the first few years I worked *here*, no one covered for me. Now, I have someone covering, but ... I still had to think long and hard for taking off 6 working days in a row. I felt like the OP; time off is just not worth it. But every once in a while...when the right offer comes along for occupying the time...
So - I just returned from vacation two days ago. The note that was left for me, said something like, "I read the instructions you left for me. I understood them. It was a really easy thing to do. I didn't do it. I left it for you."
*shakes head* Huh? I don't understand why really really easy things were left undone. It took all day yesterday to go through that kind of thing.
And today, my computer wouldn't even buzz.
To say I have a ton of work to do is minimizing the stack in my In Box.
To say this was an unproductive day is a vast understatement.
The next 2 days are not projected to be fun.

Well,I finally asked for a week off in July,but got declined because one week is too much for me to make-up when I return. My boss is requesting that I take a few days off here and there,but she will not allow me to leave for a week although I have the time.Do you think that's fair? I certainly don't.

If it's the result of a temporary heavy workload for your area, or a temporary staffing shortage, or some other reason that's not long term in nature, then I don't see the problem with it. Sometimes we just have to deal with heavy loads from time to time.
If it's the way business is normally done over there, or if other folks with substantially similar jobs are able to get time off, then yes I would call that a problem.

Then the question becomes, are they permanently short staffed or is it a temporary thing that will pass. If they're operating the business on a permanently understaffed basis (not just a seasonal or temporary thing, but a long term intent to keep on this way) to the extent that noone can take a week off, then it's a problem.
Edit: Note that there are times when you just can't afford to add someone, even if you know it's the right thing to do. That's a different story. I'm assuming they can afford to, but don't want to.

No one ever covers me. I just put in longer weeks prior to and following my vacation days in order to complete my projects. There are always emergency contacts in case of fires.

The thing that I don't like about that approach (around here) is you have to walk up and down the hall saying "I'm going to be off, do you think you'll need anything next week?" If I do it too early, it seems like I get things that aren't due for 2-3 weeks, but would get started during the off week. If I wait too long, there will be a genuine need that I have to rush to do.
Last year, I did prints of 12 drawings, 8 copies each. I had it timed and the printer needed to run for 8 hours to do the job. It took two days, because of prep time and I had to let the plotter 'open' for other print jobs as well as other jobs I was doing. I jumped on it because I was taking a long weekend. I went down to tell the girl it was done, and she was off Thursday / Friday. I came back Tuesday and the drawings were still here (I sent an email) So, I printed out her note asked for them by the end of the week the previous week, wrote 'complete' on it, and clipped it to the drawings. She moved them by Wednesday and on Monday the next week they were still there. This has been on my mind, because she asked for 2 copies of some of them, and I know the request for 8 is coming because it has to do with an application that is due in August and I was reviewing my notes.

I'm not allowed to get sick or go on vacation (not entirely joking here...)
I was in a serious car accident 18 months ago (could have been fatal had I been driving a smaller vehicle). We spent the night in the emergency room and I'm still dealing with the injuries sustained...I left the emergency room at 7 am...to drop my child off with his baby sitter and go to work.
When I had to take leave for accident related Dr appointments, most of the time I had to make up the hours working late or coming in on the weekend.
I worked for 4-6 weeks this spring knowing I was sick (turned out to be pneumonia and bronchitis) but didn't have time to go to the Dr. (also figured if I actually saw the dr, I'd be told I couldn't work and we had a big project on which I was the lead coming up).
However, if I am actually out whether there is someone to cover for me or not, I know that when I come back, all I will have to do is the current projects. Our projects are quick turnaround type things--we get a request with delivery dates: then we gather data, run models, do analysis and put out a product all in a 24 hour (or less) period. Can't really start it earlier, because the model results aren't valid if the data is not current. And if we miss the delivery date, it often means that the product is no longer of use because the project it was supporting is over. Of course, a request may have multiple dates or span a long period of time; some have no specified end date, just a frequency of product delivery and some can pop-up over night. Makes it tough to plan things.
