I pretty much try to do things for myself, but if I can't I then call my Dad or my younger Bro.

I call M's mom. I can do all the home maintenance stuff. It's the Girl maintenance that I sometimes get stuck on. Cooking is always an adventure. M's been gone 2 1/2 years now and she was sick for 2 years before that so I've got 4 years of taking care of everything under my belt. But it sure was rough going in the beginning. I didn't know hwo to cook or launder hardly anything

Now well, if I asked they would be here in a moments notice. But I would have to ask. I'm not so good at that. I understand. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt, lost my luggage and had my wallet stolen by a little old lady pick pocket. It gets better. You're learning a whole new life. I would practice the asking part though. It helps to have help. Part of the problem is they don't know you need the help and they don't want to intrude. Most would fall all over themselves to get there and help you. People want to help. they just need permission to.

When I first got divorced I always felt funny asking anyone but my parents for help because I grew up in the church we went to and everyone knew how spoiled I was am. After my parents moved to Florida before the boys and I a few would step in but most would grumble about it (I think they were still friends with the ex). When we moved here no one knew me, or how spoiled I was am so it was no big deal to them if something came up. Unfortunately I was already pretty jaded so I didn't go to anyone but my father. When they were out of town and half my electricity went out was the first time I ever called someone. I felt horrible about it, practically bawling my eyes out because I wasn't able to fix my own problems. When they came over his wife was very comforting and assuring that I wasn't inconveniencing them, and he took care of my problem (praise God he was an electrician! *grin*). Since then I've gotten a little better with asking people, but I still feel like a HUGE inconvenience. The only person I ALWAYS go to for problems is Kyoudai; he has helped me change lightbulbs, kill bugs, and he even cleaned my house once while I was on vacation.

When we worked in our singles group there was a single lady that every month would invite a guy over for dinner and have him change her air filter while he was there. Everyone knew she was not interested in the guy, but he got a free meal and she got her filter changed so neither complained. Each month we would guessed who it was going to be. It was kind of a running joke, all in fun though. I hear she was a really good cook.

. . . ...... I try to figure it out for myself first..... us women can do amazing things! I have several male friends who are very handy at a moment's notice... ... and if that fails - my church has a ministry which helps single moms, widows, and the very elderly. I don't feel like I'm alone anymore.... it's cool.

I ask people from my church for help. My step-father had 2 strokes a year ago so he is unable to help. I do save car issues for family get togethers and beg my uncles and cousins to help. LOL

ORIGINAL: followtheLeader So your single again or just moved out on your own, and there are things that come up that you don't know how to do or have never done because there was always someone else in your life to do it, Husband, Dad, or Brother. Sooo Who Ya Gonna Call? What is is that you do? Do you call a friend? your Dad? Look it up on the internet and try to figure it out yourself. Pay a handy man? Mickey mouse your way through it? or like me....leave it undone? I now have so many lights burned out in my house, that I move a small lamp from place to place. They are really high up and I have already fallen once. Okay, I know your not as helpless as me now But before you got so self sufficient What did you do? This is not just a girl thing. I'm sure some of you guys have been in a similar situation wondering, what would she have done if she were still here. What do you do? Ghostbusters yeah I know, not funny. I try to figure it out myself, either getting info online, or just tinker with it until I get it. If I can't I call my father, if he can't tell me I call someone else. I don't pay someone to do it unless it is my last resort. I even have fixed my computer and replaced parts just by messing around with it, but I wouldn't suggest you do that.

Well, you've brought up a rant, dear Nadine; I will call my Dad--but I liked how you described it: it's like asking him to take a break from running the world. And for big things, I do call him because I have to. But that's no guarantee that anything will be accomplished. But I long ago gave up on him and every other male in my family and church as far as help with smaller things like changing light bulbs or filters or hanging stuff. And the church...oh, don't get me started on the church. I think I may have mentioned here once the story of the deacon who drove by my house everyday, saw my lawn becoming higher and higher, and when my lawn was mentioned in a conversation, he said "Yeah, I saw that and wondered what the deal was." DUH!!! The DEAL, dude, is that I'm a widow with four children (three of them are girls and they are busy, too) two part time jobs and going to school full time. My father, as helpful as he is, is nearly 80 years old. You are a DEACON, for cryin' out loud. If you wonder what's going on with my lawn, you could MOW it, you know!!! So I've learned to get it done myself or do without. besiderself
