I got trapped in some spyware(grrr...)but I successful removed it by electronic gymnastics(whew!) however, I can't change my desktop, screensaver or graphic on my desktop because there's no longer that option in the 'Themes' tab in my 'Display Properties'. My background graphic says 'Warning! Spyware Detected...blah, blah) Help!

Not too sure if this applies to you or not, but there is a program called Antispyware XP 2008 that has been causing this issue (warning on desktop background). You can find a program that can help you clean it up here. If you would like more detailed instructions on doing this, or if that has nothing to do with your issue, I'd recommend the following site for cleaning up a computer--Malware Removal forum. They are monitored by trained experts who direct you to free programs that will help you clean up your computer.

Jon please do a favor and quit recommending Linux to non-technical users. A majority of people asking questions need a simple answer to their solution and I think it's pretty easy to differentiate the technical people from the non technical ones. I think if someone has a genuine interest in Linux they will be able to handle downloading it themself. To the OP: Try downloading Spybot Search and destroy or another spyware program. It's free and then go from there.

Thanx guys and gals but 'Antispyware XP 2008' was the 'problem'. I tried to 'uninstall' with no success so I d/l-ed SUPERAntiSpyware and that "cleaned" 'Antispyware XP 2008' out apparently, at least it's no longer in my process registry except I have that 'Warning' on my desktop with no way to remedy it permanently; when I boot it is the same screen. I suspect they're trying to get me to buy something to 'fix the problem' plus the 'Warning' replaced a picture of one of my missionaries! annoying to say the least.

My background graphic says 'Warning! Spyware Detected...blah, blah) Help! My daughter had that same virus I think. Anywhere we wanted to click was a virus warning with a link to "Fix" the problem. I can't remember what it was called. We kept getting popups too. It was awful. I ran Trend Micro Housecalls and got rid of the trojans, I think it said there were 6 of them. but that same graphic on her background remained. So then I used system restore to go back a few days and I was able to get her desktop picture back and remove that graphic on her background. I then reran the free trendmicro housecalls virus/trojan remover make sure I got rid of it altogether. It does run fine now but it was a pain.

LCannon, please see the link I posted earlier. I believe it has instructions on how to entirely eliminate that program, even the desktop wallpaper.

And as a side-note... When you're browsing the web and get pop-ups or banner ads that say something to the effect of, "Warning! Your computer is at risk! Click here to fix..etc.." IGNORE THOSE. They are garbage and actual spyware/malware themselves.

A hearty "Amen" to the above post. Yes that Antimalware XP 2008 is what is called "rogue antispyware," which is a program that appears to be a malware fighter, but is itself malware. That's why if my AVG ain't compainin', then I blissfully ignore those flashing banner ads that tell me that I've got 5 thousand viruses.

Well I agree with you, Paul, but while I'm adequately protected with the threat of spyware/viruses hovering it's annoying(at least)when a s/w 'attaches' and bugs the daylight out of me!

I got lucky! I googled something medical a few weeks ago and got one of these adware warnings that I had a virus and needed to install their junk. It hung out on my task bar as if it were a microsoft firewall product. It was a mess... My solution worked. I did a system restore. This does not always work and is a reminder that regardless of good firewall/virus software, we need to be careful where we virtually tread.
