Does anyone know of any websites that one could compare writing assignments for different grade levels & subjects? I know it isn't always good to expect a homeschool student to be at certain levels if not ready....but I know all my kids probably lack in writing and it would be nice to see what the average student does for written work. How much written work per subject and how long they write for assignments (a parapgraph vs a whole page). This is the one area I hear other h.school mom's talk about is that their child was a little surprised with how much writing there is in college.
If you don't know of any webistes, could you tell me the grade level and what you expect for writing assignments? For instance, if they are to answer questions for History...do you expect a complete sentence at a certain age/grade, or just the answer, or do you do everything orally?
For Writing a report of some sort...do you expect a couple paragraphs, or a whole page? How often do you have them do a report? My kids have actually never been assigned a report.
How do you raise expectations gently with this? I just don't know what would be too much.

I don't know if this helps you, but in third grade, my class was writing 3-5 sentences a day on a topic determined by the teacher. She would just write on the board something like, "Today I never expected..." And then we would finish it by writing a few sentences. Sometimes it would be serious, sometimes silly.
In middle school we regularly wrote reports, usually book reports, that were about two pages long. It was handwritten back then, but nowadays would probably be typed out.
In high school I do remember writing one 10-page paper and a few shorter papers, in the 5-page range. Those were all typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins. (Except for the time I spent in private school and homeschool, where I wrote nothing.)
In college, there was A LOT of writing. Everything from a two-page brief to a 20-page research paper. And even if you take classes that don't have papers assigned to you, you will have to write essays as tests. It was not unusual for freshman-level history, political science and English classes to use essay tests, which means you could potentially be filling up a dozen pages in the space of an hour or two.

It not that I don't think that the health care system needs reformation, but with the Gov't's track record, I fear that it will be like trying to sculpt a statute of my great-grandmother by using a shotgun.

That's a great site and it looks pretty much in line with what I experienced and what my nieces and nephews are doing. (ages 10-17)

I too was concernd about what my kids writing should look like until I got a temp job scoring the 6th grade essay section for a standarized test and realized that the writing abilites of children vary greatly! I suppose writing skills develop at different speeds.
I do require my 4th grader and 2nd grader to answer questions in complete sentences. It looks like the site that was given for examples of student writing is a great one.
There is a website thatI use for writing assignments for my boys (I'm not sure of which grade you are teaching but I hope it helps). I have theoldest do an assignment daily and the 2nd grader does 1-2 per week. It is:
