I was reading a book and came accross this passage... He (satan) knows what we like and what we don't like. he knows our insecurities, our weaknesses and our fears. He knows what bothers us most. What do you think? Does satan know as much as Jesus does about us?

I was reading a booking that said that satan walks about, like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour which tells me that he has to watch and observe our actions in order to learn about our weaknesses. A lion always looks for the weakest of his prey so that it will be easier to take it down. Satan is not a god. He cannot read our thoughts or possess the soul of a Christian. We must be careful in giving him more power than he deserves. However, he can wreak havoc if you so much as crack open the door.

Look at the book of Job...it clearly shows that Satan knew all about Job, where he lived, how God had blessed him...if Satan knew about Job, I believe he knows about us, but God knows us better.. Satan went by Job's house (Job 1 v 10 "Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land." "If God be for us, who can be against us?" walkin2e

Please correct me someone if I'm wrong. Was it not C S Lewis who said that the devil's greatest trick is to let you believe that he doesn't exist? Now that's the level of creature we are dealing with here. He stalks you like a wild animal, waits until you are totally unaware, then puts temptation in your way to lead you astray from God. Of course he knows about you, your likes and dislikes etc ... how else can he tempt you otherwise? How much he really knows is open to debate - although I suspect he knows as much as God allows him to know.

I don't believe Satan is all-knowing... but he is observant and we're not good at hiding stuff. I think He knows as much as we reveal through our actions, our expressions, our words, our predictability... not to mention "there is nothing new under the sun," so he probably is good at reading us and predicting.

If I could observe all of the actions of someone for a period of time, whether with others or alone, eventually I would be able to predict their behavior. It is not that hard! Consider that Satan has been doing this for a few years... so how good is he at this? It still suprises me to see a man who is with his beautiful wife, basicly undressing another women without even trying to hide what he is doing. His true thoughts have made him stupid and Satan can easily handle him with his little pinky. Even those who are very good with their little secrets eventually get tripped up by the sneaky snake. The bottom line... Jer:17:9: The heart is deceitful above all things... and Satan only needs to watch and wait.

Satan gauges most of his information from our appetites. He's not that concerned with our words after all James said, "Talk is cheap "...show me your faith without obedience and I will show you my faith by my obedience." James 2:17,18 His ideal disciple is lukewarm for the hard core one's burn out.

Is that your understanding, too?

Satan knows mankind. He has been around since Adam and Eve observing and tempting every living soul. Mankind all has the same basic weaknesses which are covered in 1 John 2:15-17: Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever. (1Jn 2:15-17 NASB) These are what he tempted Eve with and again later he tempted Jesus in the same manner. Let's face it we are not as complicated as we think we are. Some of us are stronger in areas than others and we each have our own individual weaknesses, alcohol, drugs, sex, self, whatever. The bible tells us that the angels are like the stars in the sky as far as numbers are concerned, and when Satan was expelled from heaven he took one third of those angels with him. So he has enough servants to watch and observe each and every person and learn each and every trait and weakness they have and then continue to work on those weaknesses. We all have friends who we "know" like the back of our hands. We know what they will do in certain situations, how they will act or what they will say. We know what a lot of their weaknesses are as well so what makes us think that Satan, who has been at this for 6000 years, isn't a whole lot better than we are? No, he is not all knowing, only God is omniscient, but he knows more than we give him credit for.

Satan is not omniscient or omnipresent. How can he tempt so many people in this world?

Perhaps, we are using "Satan" to also include his dominion of demons, because he is unable to get at everyone. Besides, James tells us, "But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death." -James 1:14-15

I believe satan only knows what we tell him. "I am afraid" "I am lonely" "I don't feel loved" Etc etc etc.

So, it seemed, while you were saying he doesn't know our thoughts, he does know our thoughts. Yes, I agree he is observant. He is a student of humanity. He knows us better than we know ourselves. He knows our passions. He knows we are selfish beings and that we want what we want when we want it. I also think he knows how to play with our minds; plant thoughts that get us focused on self and off God.

It goes back to what James said in James 1, the thoughts come from our old nature and it's that old nature that needs to be defeated - not an internal visit by Satan.

Good point Walker. I don't think he knows everything about us and I believe the quote below is also worth considering: quote:
ORIGINAL: SonInMe1 satan does not know our spirit. satan does not know our heart. satan knows our flesh. I agree SonInMe1 - the devil may have known where Job lived and that Job was wealthy, etc but he did not know Job's heart or spirit or else he would not have asked God permission to try and prove that Job's heart would not be with God if Job lost everything. The devil was not sure about Job's heart condition and wanted to test Job's commitment to God. quote:
I think he knows as much as we reveal through our actions, our expressions, our words, our predictability... not to mention "there is nothing new under the sun," so he probably is good at reading us and predicting. Although this is probably true, the devil did not predict Job too well (so he has a lot of guess work going on too and gets things wrong)! Something else worth noting is that a lion likes to separate it's prey from the rest of the herd! If he can get a Christian to stay away from church, Bible Study, the prayer meeting, etc he finds it much easier to go in for the attack. The Bible says that Satan comes to steal and to destroy - it doesn't actually say he came to make us sin. He lies to us and we may sin if we listen to him however! Ecclesiastes 4:12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

Jimbofletch is correct, satan can not dwell in one once God made His home there. It states in the bible when Saul who disobeyed God on several occassions was not indewlled by satan, however God allowed him (Saul) to be bothered by a spirit. The only thing that soothed king Saul was music, ironically enough played by the future king David. CRH

I mean, for example in this world....there're always some bad apples in any Army entity in any country in any given generation. Please enlighten me on this, thank you. God bless.

I mean, for example in this world....there're always some bad apples in any Army entity in any country in any given generation. Please enlighten me on this, thank you. God bless. Here's what I think we can extrapolate: Angels are created with free will - this is how Satan and the third of heaven could fall. I don't think that angels ceased to have free will, so it's possible (though I think a remote chance) that others may fall. I also think it's possible that some of those fallen may seek redemption - one of my characters in a short story was a fallen angel who wanted redemption in the eyes of God. As to whether Satan knows our thoughts, think on this: does your father/mother/guardian know what you're thinking? It's a practice of watching people and knowing them, they show signs they don't know they're showing and outside observers can pick up on that, fallen angels included. Lucifer himself might not personally be leading the attack on you, but with 1/3 of heaven falling however many that was it means there's a lot of demons prowling around helping him and pulling the same tricks on us, presenting the same temptations.
