You here all these things about folks not reading in the US and yet you see this line upon line of Christians opening books and enjoying them. Maybe because so much of what passes in Hollywood as entertainment misses us completely? Just sp[ot-read MacArthur's Faith Works for another forum. Daily on the Lucado Grace for the Moment. Hustling God by M. Craig Barnes. Did you notice, too, how many of us re-read books. Thanks, Mr. Lewis. Frankly, it seems to me that most Christians are not readers. Sadly, that's just our culture. Reading usually takes a little patience, and most people have been conditioned to get everything NOW and not being willing to wait -- including a lot of Christians. So most of the books that are really popular are books that don't take a lot of time or effort to come to the point. They're almost like commercials or infomercials in written form. They move reading from something that is active to something passive. For example Purpose Driven Life. I have long thought it achieved what it has because it was written for today's audience. Look at how the points are made -- not even sentences but quick, between the eyes phrases that don't require a lot of thought. By the way, if that's the kind of book that's appropriate for today's audience, then so be it. But it's kind of a shame that with all of our freedom, we're not willing to put in more effort to exercise our brains.

I am reading When God Writes Your Love Story, by Eric and Leslie Ludy. It's a re-read. I read so fast that by the time I get to "reading" something, it's usually "read" in a day or two.

I think your comments might apply to the US, or even to "the west", but not to Christians worldwide. I think that there are parts of the world where people in general read more than we do in the US. And I think that Christians in those parts of the world read even more than their neighbors do. Perhaps missonaries will come to the US from countries like that, and teach us how to read our Bible!

And I think that Christians in those parts of the world read even more than their neighbors do. Perhaps missonaries will come to the US from countries like that, and teach us how to read our Bible! Sad commentary about missionairies coming to teach us to read the Bible, but there's some truth in that. I don't know that this lack of reading is limited to the U.S., but probably is more of a western thing although some of the developed (and developing) countries in the East are catching up to us on this shift toward not reading. Basically, it's evident in countries where entertainment technology is so readily available. People tend to fill up their time with that instead of reading. Missionaries are usually in places (not always but usually) where this kind of technology is not so easily accessible, so it makes sense they're not distracted with it. To bring this back to topic, so the mods won't slap me : A great book that deals in part with the subject is Amusing Ourselves To Death by Neil Postman. Somewhere way back on this thread or one of the older ones is my comment about reading it. LOL!

Middle Eastern Mythology by S. H. Hooke. Dated (1963) but I'm enjoying it so far. I expect to disagree with the later chapters, though.

The Family by Jeff Sharlet and what bzirk said up there, " Frankly, it seems to me that most Christians are not readers. Sadly, that's just our culture.
